The Hydroelectric Power Plant Located on the Canoas River in Santa Catarina Is Set to Start Operating in July 2022 and Will Have a Capacity of 142 MW
On the morning of Tuesday, August 3, the São Roque hydroelectric power plant, located on the Canoas River between the municipalities of Vargem and São José do Cerrito in the state of Santa Catarina, lowered the rotor of the first turbine. The plant is set to start operating in July 2022 and will have a capacity of 142 MW. The project is the largest hydroelectric plant under construction in Brazil, and work was resumed last week. The Resumption of Construction of the Power Plant and Job Creation
The construction work of the plant in Santa Catarina was slowed down in 2016 when it was 80% completed, with only conservation and maintenance activities of the installations ongoing. It is worth noting that the total investment is R$ 1.1 billion. Regarding job creation, around 400 people have been mobilized since January. This number will increase as new construction fronts are resumed and is expected to reach 650 to 700 by September.
Ênio Schneider, project coordinator of the São Roque Power Plant, emphasizes that the new funding for the completion of the work is between R$ 350 million and R$ 400 million. This amount is for all activities, including the power plant construction and the transmission line, as well as socio-environmental issues, including compensation for properties.

The Project Features a Large Reservoir
One of the distinctive features of the São Roque Power Plant will be the regulation reservoir, which means that in times of heavy rain, it will be possible to store water to be used during drier periods.
Businessman José Antunes Sobrinho states that “Our reservoir has a significant water surface area, about 30 square kilometers of water surface and we can use part of it for placing solar panels. We are also considering installing a thermal power plant using vegetable oil. We have the motor and generator group and are thinking about placing a thermal plant, using the same substation that connects to Abdon Batista; this way, we would have three different forms of renewable energy here. But this is a second phase, which we are already working on.”

Nova Engevix, operating in the Energy, Infrastructure, and Industries sectors, is currently negotiating funding of approximately R$ 150 million with a national bank and an investment fund, out of a total of R$ 383 million needed to complete the construction of the São Roque hydroelectric power plant, in Santa Catarina. Additionally, the remaining resources will come from credit provided by turbine and generator manufacturers, own resources, and advance revenue from already sold energy.
According to Ênio Schneider, project coordinator of the power plant, the project is committed to delivering an average of 60 MW of energy to distributors starting in 2025. The energy block, which corresponds to 75% of the marketable energy, will have a cash flow capable of sustaining the financial equation of the project.
