Petrobras Announces Drilling of New Well in the Potiguar Basin, Within the Equatorial Margin, with Drilling Ship Expected in January.
Petrobras confirmed that it intends to drill a new exploratory well in deep waters of the Potiguar Basin, in Rio Grande do Norte, in the coming months.
The announcement was made during a meeting between the state-owned company’s president, Magda Chambriard, and Governor Fátima Bezerra, who highlighted the economic and social impact of the initiative for the region.
The start of activities is expected to occur after the arrival of the drilling ship, scheduled for January, and the authorization from Ibama.

New Well Mãe Ouro Strengthens Petrobras’ Exploration in the Equatorial Margin
The new well, named Mãe Ouro, will be drilled about 52 km off the Potiguar coast and at depths exceeding 2,000 meters.
It is part of the Equatorial Margin, a strategic area extending from Rio Grande do Norte to Amapá, which has been identified as one of the major frontiers for expanding oil and gas production in Brazil.
Oil Potential and Expectations for the Potiguar Basin
According to Petrobras, seismic studies already conducted indicate strong potential for oil reserves in the region.
If the analyses are confirmed, the new well could enable the creation of an offshore cluster, that is, a set of maritime operations that favor large-scale production.
This outlook increases the chances of the Potiguar Basin establishing itself as a relevant hub in the national energy sector.
History of Previous Discoveries
The state-owned company had already drilled two other wells in the Potiguar Basin, named Pitu Oeste and Anhangá.
Both found indications of oil, and now the company is evaluating the technical and commercial viability of these discoveries.
The move towards a new well shows that the company intends to accelerate its presence in the Equatorial Margin, considered strategic for the country’s future energy landscape.
Economic Expectations for Rio Grande do Norte
During the meeting with the Petrobras board, Governor Fátima Bezerra celebrated the investments.
She emphasized that the new well represents not only technological advances but also job and income opportunities for the population.
According to Fátima: “We are very happy with this news of new investments from Petrobras in the Potiguar Basin. The drilling of this third well signals the company’s commitment to developing oil and gas exploration in the Equatorial Margin, bringing great potential for economic development to Rio Grande do Norte, with job and income generation for our people.”
President Magda Chambriard is expected to return to the state in October to discuss new partnerships and projects related to the exploration of the Potiguar Basin.
