Petrobras begins assembly of the P-84 platform at the Seatrium Aracruz Shipyard
Petrobras has started to assemble a giant platform in Espírito Santo, which will extract a lot of oil from the pre-salt layer. It will be ready by 2029 and will greatly help in energy production in Brazil.

New unit will be installed in the Atapu field, with operations scheduled for 2029

Petrobras has begun construction of the P-84 platform modules at the Seatrium Aracruz Shipyard in Espírito Santo. With the capacity to process 225 barrels of oil per day, the unit will be installed in the Atapu field, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, and is expected to begin operations in 2029.

Petrobras begins construction of P-84 in Espírito Santo

The Seatrium Aracruz Shipyard, formerly known as Jurong, has begun assembling the modules for Petrobras' P-84 platform. This unit is considered one of the largest oil production structures ever built, with the capacity to process 225 barrels of oil per day. The platform will be installed in the Atapu field, located in the pre-salt layer of Santos Basin, with operations scheduled to begin in 2029.

Brazilian participation in construction

The construction of the P-84 will be divided between Brazil, China and Singapore. The shipyard in Espírito Santo will be responsible for three modules of the platform, representing 20% of the total structure. The other 80% will be assembled in Asian shipyards. During the peak of the construction, it is estimated that 3,5 jobs will be created. Currently, the shipyard is involved in the construction of modules for the P-82 platform, employing around 5 direct and indirect workers.

Expansion of Petrobras projects

In addition to P-84, Petrobras plans to begin construction of the P-85 platform modules at Seatrium Aracruz in the first quarter of 2026. Platforms P-84 and P-85 will be installed in the Atapu and Sépia fields, respectively, both in ultra-deep waters (more than 2 meters) in the Santos Basin pre-salt. P-85 is expected to start operating in 2030. Petrobras' total investment in these two platforms is estimated at around US$11 billion, although the state-owned company does not officially disclose the amounts.

Sustainable technologies incorporated

The P-84 and P-85 platforms will be equipped with several technologies sustainable, including:

  • Zero routine ventilation: recovery of vented gases from cargo tanks and processing plant.
  • Deep seawater abstraction: use of water abstracted at greater depths for cooling operations and other processes.
  • Variable speed drives in pumps and compressors: improving energy efficiency.
  • Cogeneration (Waste Heat Recovery Unit): use of residual heat to generate energy.
  • Zero routine flaring: recovery of flare gases through a closed flare system.
  • Valves with requirements for low fugitive emissions: reduction of unintentional emissions.
  • Capture, use and geological storage of CO₂: treatment and storage of CO₂ produced together with the gas.

With production expected to begin between 2029 and 2030, the P-84 and P-85 platforms represent a significant advance for Petrobras in pre-salt exploration, consolidating themselves as emblematic projects both for their production capacity and sustainability.
