Petrobras, in Partnership with Fugro, Executes First 100% Remote Offshore Submarine Operation in the Americas Using Unmanned Vehicles in the Campos Basin.
Petrobras achieved a groundbreaking feat in the Americas. About a month ago, the company carried out a fully remote submarine operation (100%). The event took place in the Brazilian offshore environment. It was a partnership with the company Fugro, in the Garoupa field, in the Campos Basin.
Petrobras and Fugro: Pioneering in the Garoupa Field
This pioneering operation was the result of the partnership between Petrobras and Fugro. It represents a very important strategic advancement. It demonstrates the application of new technologies for underwater inspection and maintenance. The Garoupa field was the setting for this technological milestone.
How Does It Work? The USV and ROV Technology in Remote Operations
The innovative technology uses unmanned vehicles. A USV (unmanned surface vehicle) was the base of the operation. The model used was the Fugro Vaquita. This surface platform launches and operates a ROVe. The ROVe is a remotely operated underwater vehicle that is fully electric.

All control was done remotely. Both the USV (on the surface) and the ROVe (submerged) were remotely commanded. The commands came from Fugro’s control center. This center is located in Rio das Ostras (RJ). The operation occurred without any crew on board the vehicles.
Petrobras Explores New Submarine Capabilities
This technological platform enables new capabilities for Petrobras. With it, it is possible to carry out detailed submarine inspections. It also allows for small interventions on already installed underwater equipment and pipelines.
The implementation of this technology brings significant benefits. Underwater operations become safer. Operational risks and occupational risks for workers are reduced. Furthermore, there is a significant environmental gain. The use of USV instead of a conventional RSV (support vessel) allows for over a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The efficiency of operations is also enhanced.
