Petrobras Positioning Drilling Rig NS-42 in Amapá for Environmental Assessment That May Release New Exploratory Phase.
Petrobras has initiated one of the most anticipated phases of its operations in the Equatorial Margin. On the night of last Monday, August 18th, the drilling rig NS-42 arrived at the offshore block FZA-M-59, in deep waters off the Amapá, about 175 kilometers from the coast.
The operation precedes the Pre-Operational Assessment (APO), scheduled for August 24th. This procedure is mandatory and represents the final step for Petrobras to obtain the necessary environmental license to drill a new well in the region.
How Will the Pre-Operational Assessment in Amapá Be?
During the APO, the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) will analyze whether Petrobras is fit to proceed with drilling.

Petrobrás indicates a strong first quarter in 2026 with high production, robust cash generation, and an expectation of up to $2.4 billion in dividends for shareholders.
The process includes simulating an environmental accident, in which rapid response protocols, containment equipment, and assistance to local wildlife will be tested.
The drilling rig will be at the center of the operation, supported by helicopters, large vessels, and over 400 professionals mobilized for the exercise.
The goal is to assess not only technical efficiency but also the speed of communication between Petrobras, environmental authorities, and the communities involved.
Petrobras’ Experience Strengthens Operation in Amapá
According to the company’s president, Magda Chambriard, Petrobras is bringing its largest incident response structure ever mobilized to Amapá.
The action replicates similar protocols to those conducted in 2023, on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, prior to authorization for drilling the Pitu Oeste and Anhangá wells.
According to Chambriard, the confirmation of oil presence in the Equatorial Margin could open a new energy frontier for Brazil.
The goal is for this development to occur in an integrated manner with renewable sources, in line with the global energy transition.
Drilling Rig Reinforces Environmental Protocols
Petrobras emphasizes that its operations in the Equatorial Margin are guided by strict environmental and social standards.
The company claims to possess internationally recognized expertise in deep-water exploration, a result of decades of operations along the Brazilian coast.
With the drilling rig NS-42 positioned and the APO underway, Petrobras aims to demonstrate its preparedness to ensure that exploration in Amapá occurs safely, sustainably, and responsibly.
