Petronas has just launched a new line of fluids specifically for electric vehicles. The producer has been focusing since 2019 on developing technologies for e-mobility and aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Petronas Lubricants International Sdn. Bhd. (PLI), the global manufacturing and marketing sector of lubricants from Petronas, launched the new generation of Petronas Iona for Electric Vehicles (EV) – at its Global Research and Technology Center in Italy, achieving an important milestone in technological fluid innovation.
The launch themed “Accelerating Efficiency, Revolutionizing e-Mobility” represents an achievement in pursuing increasingly recent technologies and trends in the realm of electric cars.

Electric Vehicle Sales Grew by 70% in 2020
According to data published in the Global EV Outlook 2021, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the sales of electric vehicles saw a 70% increase in 2020, while conventional vehicle sales dropped. This fact demonstrates, in practice, the importance of investing in the sector.
“We believe e-mobility is expanding at a rapid pace. With this rapid growth, innovative solutions are essential to drive the movement towards e-mobility for a more sustainable future,” said the CEO of the PLI Group, Giuseppe D’Arrigo.
The Petronas Lona line, launched primarily in 2019, aims for energy decarbonization, optimizing the efficiency, safety, and performance of electric vehicles with advanced EV fluid solutions. Since then, the company has been working on developments to keep pace with technological evolution.
The subsequent generation of Petronas Lona was designed to meet the diverse demands of electric drive systems and powertrains, including friction and wear control, as well as thermal management for temperature regulation, to maximize performance, energy efficiency, and reliability of high-performance electric vehicles.
Investment in Carbon Neutrality by 2050
To support the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, Petronas invests 75% of its research and technology investment fund in initiatives such as accelerating the full operation of electric cars to meet sustainability goals.
After the launch, PLI brought together industry-leading experts for its second online video seminar (webinar), Petronas EV Fluids Webinar 2021, aimed at discussing fluids to drive the electric vehicle industry forward and collectively advance towards a sustainable future. The event covered all topics of extreme importance for development, presented by PLI experts.
Since 2018, Petronas has been working on collaborative projects with industry pioneers in the co-creation of safe fluids specifically designed for electric motors.
