After The Petrochemical Industry Reduces Energy Consumption At The Bahia Plant, Braskem Wants To Expand Its Energy Efficiency In Other States
Braskem, operating in the chemical and petrochemical sector, wants to invest and expand its energy efficiency program in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Alagoas, and Rio Grande do Sul, after reducing electricity consumption at its plant in the Camaçari Complex in Bahia. The company invested R$ 65 million and reduced 833 GWh.

In the process of improving energy utilization at the Camaçari plant, ten energy-saving measures were implemented, mainly for digital operation and optimizing the energy used by the furnaces of the units, as these equipment are the ones that need the most electricity at the plant.
The project’s initiative has two objectives: on one hand, to generate financial savings for the company; on the other, to help meet the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 15% by 2030. By 2050, the company aims to achieve zero emissions. Gustavo Checcucci, Director of Energy at Braskem, says, “We are structuring projects for efficiency at each of our sites throughout this decade.”

Gustavo also states that “We are very aligned with the energy transition and will face the challenge of reinventing ourselves during this process,” mentioning that the idea for the energy efficiency project in Camaçari has been ongoing for two years and was completed earlier this year.
The executive reports that Braskem is evaluating other projects in the energy sector, such as self-generated electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind. “Given our significant energy consumption, this process is quite natural,”
The petrochemical company currently maintains three contracts with companies such as EDF, Canadian, and Voltalia for the development of wind farms operated by partners. When these farms come online, they are expected to represent about 15% of the company’s electricity consumption in the free market, which currently varies annually between 350 and 400 MW.
“With them, we have important energy volume and, with these contracts, partners are developing new energy in different locations and regions so that we can build a renewable energy portfolio,” concludes Gustavo.
