The year 2023 did not start well for the national fuel market and, especially, for the final consumer. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) announced an average price of R$ 5.12 per liter of gasoline during the first week of the year in Brazil, an increase of 3.2% compared to the previous month. Diesel S10 prices also rose, reaching R$ 6.51.
Fuel Market Sees a Rise in the Average Price of Gasoline Per Liter Over the Last Two Weeks, According to the ANP
The last two weeks have seen significant setbacks regarding the prices charged for fuels across the country, following a strong period of price reductions in the previous weeks.
The ANP announced a new increase in the average price of gasoline in Brazil, which reached R$ 5.12 between January 1 and 7. This marks a 3.2% increase compared to R$ 4.96 charged for the liter of fuel in the immediately preceding week.

This is the second consecutive week of rising prices for the product, even after the Lula Government announced the extension of the suspension of the federal tax on fuels in the country.
In recent months, the sector experienced five consecutive drops in the average price of gasoline in Brazil, due to reductions in Petrobras refinery prices (-6.1% on December 9) and falls in anhydrous ethanol prices, which accounts for 27% of the fuel mixture.
However, the reality in the last week of 2022 and the first of 2023 is already quite different, with an increasing trend in the prices charged, as demonstrated by the ANP.
According to data from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics at the University of São Paulo’s School of Agriculture (Cepea/Esalq-USP), there was a cumulative increase of 4.2% in the São Paulo mills in the last two weeks of 2022.
The final consumer of the product now bears the consequences of the adjustments and price increases, with the acquisition cost of gasoline still much higher across much of the country.
North Region Experienced a 4.31% Increase in the Average Price of the Fuel Liter. ANP Also Highlights Increases in Diesel S10 Prices in the National Market
According to the ANP, the North of Brazil was the most affected region by the rise in the average price of gasoline per liter in the last two weeks, with an increase of 4.31% in value.
The main refinery serving the region, the one in Manaus, former Petrobras, had its sale to the Atem group completed at the end of November.
In the Southeast, the increase was still significant, marking 3.68%, followed by the South (2.40%) and the Midwest (0.99%).
One of the main reasons for the price increase was the decision of 11 States to raise their ICMS tax rates on fuels by up to 4% in December.
In addition to gasoline, the average price of Diesel S10 has also been experiencing increases, as highlighted by the ANP.
According to the agency, the price of Diesel S10 per liter rose 2%, or R$ 0.13 this week, from R$ 6.38 to R$ 6.51, marking yet another scenario of increases in the national fuel sector.
