The Advancement of Oil Exploration in the Equatorial Margin Gains Highlighting After Ibama Approval. Alcolumbre Thanks Lula for Support and Highlights the Importance of the Project for Amapá and Brazil.
Oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin took another important step this week. The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) approved the results of the Pre-Operational Assessment (APO) conducted by Petrobras in the Amazonas River Basin. This stage represents the final phase before the granting of the necessary environmental license to begin exploration in the area.
The advancement was celebrated by the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), who emphasized the historical relevance of the decision for the state of Amapá and for the entire country.
Alcolumbre Thanks Lula for Support in the Process
In a public speech, Alcolumbre expressed gratitude to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The senator highlighted that the achievement is the result of years of political mobilization and demands from local leaders.

Iran said that the Strait of Hormuz is open, but in practice only 1 non-Iranian oil tanker managed to cross in 24 hours — before the blockade, 100 ships passed per day.
“Without individually mentioning the names of the ministers, I want to thank President Lula. As a senator from Amapá, as a Brazilian, and as President of the National Congress. On my behalf, on behalf of the Amapá people and all the political leaders of Amapá, who have fought together for over a decade to make this dream a reality,” he declared.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) sees the Equatorial Margin as a strategic area, with potential similar to that of the pre-salt. Research and studies by Petrobras have been developed for over ten years, and the company maintains interest in turning the region into an energy exploration hub.
It is worth noting that in 2023, Ibama had denied the initial authorization. However, Petrobras appealed the decision, resulting in a revised process that culminated in the recent approval of the APO.
Sustainable Development and Environmental Preservation on the Agenda
During his speech, Alcolumbre emphasized that the authorization is a milestone that can reconcile economic development and environmental preservation. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that exploration in the Equatorial Margin is conducted responsibly, bringing growth opportunities for Amapá without compromising the biodiversity of the Amazon.
“I want to thank President Lula, who since our first meeting together, has taken our concerns about the most preserved and protected state in Brazil, and at the same time, the state we dreamed of seeing achieve development in the corners of the Brazilian Amazon. As this is concretely the possibility we will have from this environmental license,” the senator asserted.
