R$ 15 Billion Project Promises to Connect the Northeast Coast, Revolutionizing Tourism and Transportation in the Region. The Transnordestina Turística Could Unite Sustainability, Economy, and Culture in a Single Route.
The Brazilian Northeast, known for its cultural diversity and natural beauty, may be about to undergo a significant transformation in its tourism and transportation infrastructure.
An ambitious proposal, estimated at an impressive R$ 15 billion, promises to connect the coastline of the region through a tourist railway.

The first installment of the 13th salary from INSS will be released starting this Friday, and over R$ 78 billion will enter the Brazilian economy in two phases, but not all beneficiaries are entitled to the payment.
The idea, presented under the name of Transnordestina Turística, aims to connect Teresina (PI) to Salvador (BA).
Along the way, the train would pass through stunning destinations like the Parnaíba Delta, as well as other strategic points along the northeast coast.
According to the Governor of Ceará, Elmano de Freitas, this railway is seen as a great opportunity to strengthen tourism and economic integration in the region.
In an interview with Diário do Nordeste, he emphasized that the project would have a broad impact:
“Everyone wins, and you would start to work on tourism not just in Ceará and Bahia, but in the Brazilian Northeast as a whole. So it would be a great gain for everyone.”
In addition to the economic potential, the project also bets on a more sustainable transportation solution, prioritizing regional integration and reducing environmental impact compared to road and air transport.
R$ 15 Billion and the Challenges to Make the Project Viable
Although the proposal is attractive, its implementation faces several challenges. The estimated value of R$ 15 billion is just the starting point.
Economic and technical feasibility studies need to confirm whether the investment is worthwhile and if there will be sufficient demand to maintain operations.
Among the alternatives considered, a more economical solution would be to leverage the infrastructure of the Transnordestina railway, currently under construction for freight transport.
In this proposal, passenger cars would be added to the existing trains.
However, this alternative is not free of problems. Freight trains have a maximum speed of 80 km/h and make frequent stops.
These limitations may make the service less attractive to passengers, especially on long-distance trips.
Current Situation of the Transnordestina
While the tourism project is still on paper, the Transnordestina railway continues to have ongoing construction.
Originally planned for freight transport, it is 62% complete and projected to be finished by 2027.
Despite the progress, the project faces financial difficulties. In 2024, for instance, it did not receive any funding from the federal government, which delayed crucial stages of construction.
Nonetheless, experts believe that its completion could provide an important foundation for the future of the Transnordestina Turística.
The Expected Impacts of the Tourist Railway
If it comes to fruition, the Transnordestina Turística could bring profound changes to the economy and tourism of the Northeast. Here are some of the main benefits:
- Strengthened Tourism: The connection between coastal cities could increase visitor flow, benefiting inns, restaurants, and other local businesses.
- Economic Integration: The railway has the potential to create new markets between states, boosting trade and job creation.
- Sustainability: Using rail transport reduces greenhouse gas emissions, making the initiative more sustainable than road or air transport.
- Social Inclusion: For many residents in the region, the train could be a more accessible and economical transportation option.
What Is Needed for the Transnordestina Turística to Come to Life?
Despite all the enthusiasm, the project’s future depends on various variables. Among them are the results of feasibility studies, which need to confirm the technical and financial viability of the plan.
Additionally, a joint effort among state governments, the federal government, and private investors will be necessary.
So far, the Ministry of Transport has not officially commented on the proposal, but governors from the region have already expressed support for the idea.
Sustainable Alternative or Utopia?
For experts, the project represents a mix of optimism and caution. On one hand, it offers a viable alternative to road transport, which dominates the region and incurs high logistical costs.
On the other hand, there is a risk that the initiative may not materialize due to financial and technical challenges.
Whether built from scratch or adapted to the structure of the Transnordestina, the tourist train could unite modernity with the rich history of the Northeast, providing a unique experience for both residents and tourists.
