A few months ago, The Economist published an article reminding us that the last census from the Canal and Rivers Trust (CRT) shows there were 35,000 licensed vessels operating on 3.2 km of waterways across England and Wales in 2022, having one third more than in the last two decades.
In fact, in London, where these navigators aged between 25 and 34 are gaining prominence, their number has nearly doubled in the past 10 years. The report does not specify how many of these boats are used as primary residences but suggests that it is likely a good portion.

It is a considerable amount, but there are certainly cheaper options, yet, it is far from what an apartment typically costs in the country’s metropolitan areas. According to official data, in January, the average price of a residence in the country was around £268,500, equivalent to R$2 million.
If we talk about London, this value rises to nearly £600,000, or about R$4.5 million, for a one-bedroom house. This makes the British capital one of the most expensive cities in the world to become a property owner, based on information from the Global Property Guide.
Understand Why It Is Cheaper to Use Boats as Housing
If we compare the cost of acquiring a boat with buying an apartment in London, the vessel is cheaper. However, this does not mean that trading streets, housing complexes, and blocks for canals is attainable for everyone. First, because their owners pay for a navigation license. Second, because a boat incurs some expenses.
Recently, a boat owner in the United Kingdom confessed to Sky News that she spends around £4,500 annually on bills, including insurance, coal, canisters, fuel, and navigation license. Those who wish to keep their “home” in good condition every 3 or 4 years must also shell out for the paint job on the hull, something that costs around £1,200.
Although finances are a key factor, it is not the only reason explaining why Britons adopt boats as homes. Other factors come into play, such as the pandemic’s influence, the interest in traveling along the British coast, the rise of remote work, or simply a matter of taste, whether as a permanent or temporary living option.
