GTS Chose MAN ES Propulsion Solution for Four Ships, Including Main and Auxiliary Engines, as Well as MAN Alpha Propeller.
Methanol was the choice of the German tanker/chemical operator German Tanker Shipping (GTS) for the propulsion solution through MAN ES with main and auxiliary engines, as well as MAN Alpha propeller for four tanker and chemical ships.
As explained, Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding and Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry in China ordered 4 × MAN 10L32/44CR main engines in connection with the construction of 4 × 41,000 DWT oil and chemical tankers for GTS.
MAN Engines: Innovation and Sustainability
MAN’s common-rail engines are capable of operating with conventional fuels such as HFO, MDO, and MGO, as well as sustainable fuels like biodiesel (HVO and/or FAME). They are also designed to accommodate methanol as a green fuel, meeting demands for more eco-friendly propulsion solutions.

The main engines will have a power of 600 kW per cylinder and will be equipped with MAN Energy Solutions’ LP-SCR (Low Pressure Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, which will provide NOx reduction rates of up to 90% in accordance with IMO environmental requirements. The propulsion of these engines will be ensured by a MAN Alpha VBS1260 CP propeller, offering energy efficiency and sustainability in terms of fuel consumption.
Each vessel will feature MAN auxiliary engines, licensed by MAN Energy Solutions, demonstrating reliability and a commitment to advanced propulsion technologies. Additionally, cybersecurity requirements will be met by the SaCoS 5000 automation system, ensuring remote technical support and optimized operations.
Advanced Technology and Strategic Partnerships
The licensing of MAN Energy Solutions to CSSC Marine Power Co. for the construction of these engines in China is a testament to the long-standing cooperation between the two companies, highlighting their commitment to innovation and excellence in propulsion engineering.
‘This entire project is a testament to the excellent cooperation of decades between GTS and MAN Energy Solutions. It is a remarkable honor to have been selected as the propulsion system supplier for these new ice-class constructions’, stated Lex Nijsen, Vice President, Marine Europe and Americas – MAN Energy Solutions.
‘In this specific order, we are using our newest technology, equipping the ships with water-lubricated stern tubes. By doing so, we ensure that there is no ‘oil-water interface’, eliminating any risk of oil leaks and enhancing the ecological profile of the owner. These stern tubes are one of the biggest ecological trends we foresee in the market, and we have proven technology available based on our extensive experience with maritime vessels where this solution has been utilized for many years,’ noted Jens Munch, Sales Manager, MAN Alpha Frederikshavn – MAN Energy Solutions.
