In a world where English dominates areas like technology, business, science, and tourism, this skill has stopped being a differential and has become a necessity.

After all, having access to information firsthand, communicating with people from different cultures, and expanding professional horizons are just a few of the benefits of mastering the most spoken language in the world.

Now, what if you could start this journey without spending a dime and with total flexibility? The Federal Institute of Espírito Santo (IFES) is open for enrollment for the Basic English FIC Course, a unique opportunity for those who wish to learn the English language for free and entirely online.

In total, there are 250 spots available, with classes starting in April 2025.

How Does the Free English Course Offered by IFES Work?

The course, in Distance Learning (EAD) mode, is aimed at beginners in the language who wish to take their first steps with safety and quality support.

With a total workload of 60 hours, the program covers everything from basic fundamentals to practical content that helps develop essential communication skills.

Additionally, the student receives a recognized completion certificate, which adds value to their resume and can be a differential in selection processes or professional promotions.

What Will You Learn?

According to the announcement published by IFES, the Basic English FIC course has a comprehensive syllabus, ideal for those who have never been in contact with the language or wish to reinforce basic concepts.

Check out the main topics:

  • Possessive Pronouns and Essential Verbs;
  • Alphabet and Numbers from 1 to 100;
  • Prepositions of Place and Definite Article;
  • Wh-Questions and Vocabulary about Colors;
  • Seasons of the Year, Months, and Days of the Week;
  • Verb Tenses: Present Continuous and Simple Present;
  • Adjectives, Countable and Uncountable Nouns;
  • Frequency Adverbs and Everyday Vocabulary (like furniture, household items, and professions).

The content is organized to ensure that the student understands not only the grammatical rules but also the practical use of the language in daily life.

Who Can Enroll?

To participate, you must have completed elementary school, access to a computer with internet, and a willingness to learn.

According to the announcement, registrations are open until February 14, 2025 and must be made through the SIGAA Academic platform.

Furthermore, it is essential that the candidate submits the documents requested in the announcement.

The process is simple, and all necessary material can be consulted directly on the official IFES website.

How Will the Selection Process Work?

The selection of candidates will be conducted through an electronic lottery, which will take place on February 18, 2025, at 3 PM.

After this stage, the final list of selected candidates will be published on March 17, 2025, on the IFES portal.

The approved candidates must access the first discipline within five days after the start of classes, scheduled for April 2025.

Those who do not meet this deadline will have their spot automatically reallocated to another candidate.

Distribution of Spots and Available Centers

IFES has made available 250 spots, distributed equally among five regional centers.

Each center will have 50 spots, ensuring greater reach and opportunities for students from different locations in Espírito Santo. The participating centers are:

  • UAB Conceição da Barra;
  • Iúna;
  • Nova Venécia;
  • Montanha;
  • Vargem Alta.

Although the course is distance learning, the regional centers function as support hubs and are responsible for the administrative organization of the classes.

Why Is Learning English Essential?

The mastery of English is no longer optional in a world where globalization charts the course of the economy and technology.

Today, many jobs require at least the basic level of the language, especially in sectors such as information technology, tourism, foreign trade, and communication.

According to experts, English is the official language of over 50 countries and is widely used in areas of scientific innovation, international education, and business.

Having this skill can increase employability and open doors to international opportunities, in addition to enriching the cultural and personal experience of those who dedicate themselves to learning it.
