The Joaquim Nabuco Foundation (Fundaj) is a public foundation with private law status linked to the country’s Ministry of Education. Based in Recife, Pernambuco, it was founded in 1949 with the goal of preserving Joaquim Nabuco’s historical and cultural legacy, focusing on the North and Northeast regions. It has been presided over since January of last year by Professor Márcia Ângela Aguiar, a lecturer in the graduate program of the pedagogy course at the Federal University of Pernambuco.
Conceived by sociologist Gilberto Freyre in 1947, the foundation was established as the Joaquim Nabuco Institute of Social Research, in honor of the abolitionist politician who celebrated the centenary of his birth in 1949.
After temporarily settling in a rented building, it finally established itself in its current permanent headquarters in 1949, at Avenida 17 de Agosto, No. 2,187, Recife. Its first director was José Antônio Gonçalves de Mello. The foundation maintains the following cultural spaces in Recife: Museum of the Man of the Northeast, Baobá Gallery, José Carlos Cavalcanti Borges Cine-theater, Vicente do Rego Monteiro Gallery, Massangana Gallery, Waldemar Valente Gallery, Mauro Mota Room, among others.
