Unintentionally, Earth May Be Shouting into Space. A New Study Claims That Civilian and Military Radars Operate as Involuntary Signals of Intelligent Life — and These Signals May Reach Up to 200 Light-Years Away.
A new study points out that radar systems at Earth’s airports and military installations may be emitting detectable signals for possible alien civilizations.
These signals, although unintentional, could be reaching up to 200 light-years away in space.
Researchers from the University of Manchester, led by Ramiro Caisse Saide, presented the findings at the National Astronomy Meeting of the Royal Astronomical Society (NAM 2025).

According to them, the simple daily functioning of radars at large airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, and JFK may represent an unintentional “business card” for the universo.
Invisible but Powerful Signals
The research focused on the so-called “electromagnetic leakage” generated by civilian and military radars. Although these signals are not designed for space, some of them end up escaping the atmosphere and spreading through the cosmos.
Using computational modeling, scientists traced the trajectory of these signals over time.
They also analyzed how visible these signals would be from nearby stars, such as Barnard’s Star, almost 6 light-years away, and AU Microscopii, about 32 light-years from Earth.
The result showed that civilian radars generate signals totaling approximately 2×10¹⁵ watts, a value that is impressive.
For comparison, these signals could be detected by telescopes similar to the Green Bank Telescope in the United States if observers were within the 200-light-year radius.
Military Focus and Stronger Detection
In addition to civilian radars, military radars were also analyzed. According to researchers, these devices emit more targeted signals, like beams of concentrated light into the sky, which may further increase visibility for anyone at specific points in space.
“What seems like just a common radar pulse here, when viewed from space, may appear as something clearly artificial,” explained Saide, a PhD student involved in the study. “These military signals may appear up to a hundred times stronger, depending on the observation point,” he added.
What If It’s the Other Way Around?
Although the study focuses on signals emitted by Earth, researchers emphasize that the same may be occurring on other planets.
If advanced civilizations are emitting similar signals, it is also possible that we are receiving these involuntary “waves” without knowing it.
“Our findings suggest that radar signals — produced unintentionally by any planet with an aviation system and advanced technology — could act as a universal signal of intelligent life,” Saide stated.
This hypothesis broadens the scope of the search for extraterrestrial life. Besides signals intentionally sent by space agencies, such as messages sent by radio telescopes or the plaques of the Voyager probes, the study proposes that simple everyday activities may be shouting to the universe.
Change of Perspective
For Professor Michael Garrett, co-author of the research, understanding how Earth’s signals propagate in space helps not only in the search for other forms of life but also in planning future technologies.
According to him, this type of knowledge may contribute to protecting Earth’s radio spectrum and influence the design of new radar systems.
The research suggests that, even unintentionally, Earth may have been announcing itself to the universe for decades — and this changes the game in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
