After More Than 20 Years Off The Road, Volkswagen Announces The Return Of The Golf GTI Focused On The Future, 100% Electric
Volkswagen is preparing a revolution for Golf GTI fans. Andreas Mindt, chief designer of the German automaker, announced that the iconic sporty version of the Golf will have a fully electric version starting in 2026. With a legacy that dates back to 1975, the Golf GTI has always been a symbol of sportiness and is now preparing for a new era powered by batteries, according to Estadão.

The Classic Golf GTI From Volkswagen
The Volkswagen Golf GTI classic is one of the most iconic sports cars in automotive history. First launched in 1976, the Golf GTI (short for “Grand Tourer Injection”) was one of the first compact cars to offer affordable sporty performance to the general public.
The classic Golf GTI was designed to be a practical sports car, combining the compact size and fuel economy of the Golf with a more powerful engine and a set of sporty features. It was one of the pioneers in the “hot hatchbacks” category, compact cars with sporty performance and the ability to carry passengers and luggage practically.
The original Golf GTI had a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with fuel injection, producing around 110 horsepower. While these numbers may seem modest today, at the time, the Golf GTI was considered a very agile and fun car to drive, thanks to its light weight and tuned sport suspension.
