Polish Startup Presents the Airbike, Functional Hoverbike Inspired by Star Wars That Reaches 200 km/h With Jets. See How It Works and the Challenges to Become Reality.
What once seemed exclusive to the Star Wars universe is starting to take shape in the real world. The Polish startup Volonaut has revealed the prototype of a hoverbike called Airbike, a type of jet bike that directly resembles the iconic speeder bikes from the saga created by George Lucas. According to the company, the Airbike is already capable of flying in real tests without the use of visual effects (CGI), reaching speeds close to 200 km/h — an impressive mark for a vehicle of this size.
How the Airbike Inspired by Star Wars Works
The hoverbike uses a jet propulsion system, equipped with compact motors controlled by its own flight computer. This technology is responsible for maintaining the vehicle’s stability in the air, something that until recently seemed impossible outside of movie screens.
In demonstration videos released by the company, the vehicle appears to take off vertically and then maintain stable flight at low altitude, simulating the experience of riding a futuristic motorcycle.

According to Volonaut, the Airbike achieved speeds of up to 124 mph (about 200 km/h) in tests. This performance places the prototype in the same category as high-displacement sport bikes, but with the difference that it literally floats in the air.
The sensation for the pilot, according to the creators, is similar to riding a high-performance motorcycle, but with three-dimensional freedom of movement, just like in the chase scenes of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
The Promise of Commercialization
The company has already announced plans to produce limited units for collectors and enthusiasts of experimental aviation.
The price has yet to be confirmed, but expectations are that it will easily exceed the value of a Ferrari or Lamborghini, making the Airbike a luxury item aimed at a few privileged individuals.
Volonaut has also opened pre-registration of interest on its official website, indicating that the project will not remain just a laboratory prototype.
Legal and Safety Issues
Despite the enthusiasm, experts raise doubts about the commercial viability. To operate a flying motorcycle like this, it would be necessary to fit into light aviation categories, in addition to specific authorizations to fly in urban areas or airways.
Another challenge is safety: in the event of jet engine failure, no emergency systems have been disclosed, such as ballistic parachutes or redundancies. This greatly limits use outside of controlled tests.
Fiction and Reality Are Getting Closer
Even with these uncertainties, Volonaut’s project represents a significant leap in the development of vehicles inspired by science fiction.
The Airbike is further proof of how pop culture — in this case, Star Wars — influences engineers and designers to create solutions that challenge gravity and transform the concept of transportation.
Whether on test tracks or in viral videos, seeing a functional speeder bike in action shows that the future of mobility may be much closer than Hollywood imagined.
