Starlink has started to roll out, in partnership with carriers, direct satellite connectivity for compatible smartphones.

The service is already commercially operational in the United States, via T-Mobile, with messaging and some apps functioning outside traditional coverage.

Access is included at no additional cost in the carrier’s top plans and can be contracted separately for a monthly fee.

In Brazil, the technology has not been authorized for use on mobile phones, according to Anatel.

How The Connection Works On Cell Phones

When the user loses signal from mobile networks, the compatible device automatically switches to the satellite mesh and shows the satellite connection indicator in the status bar.

In the US, T-Mobile states that the phone may display the network name “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink”, without any manual adjustment.

The SAT icon indicates that the connection with the satellite has been established.

Although full browsing is not available on all devices, the carrier has started to enable text messaging, location sharing, and gradually data for optimized apps like WhatsApp, X (Twitter), Google Maps, AccuWeather, AllTrails, and T-Life.

The expansion of app support began in October 2025, following the commercial launch of the offer in July.

Compatibility: Check If Your Phone Is On The List

Compatibility depends on hardware and software and is determined by the carriers that have partnered with Starlink.

In the United States, T-Mobile maintains a list of over 60 models compatible with T-Satellite, the commercial name of the service.

Among the iPhones, those from iPhone 13 onwards, including iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone Air, are included.

In the Android ecosystem, there are Google Pixel 9 and 10 (and variants), Samsung Galaxy starting from S21, and select A lines — such as A14, A15, A16, A35, A53, and A54 — in addition to Motorola models released from 2024 onwards, with features varying between text, photo sharing, and data for apps.

The exact list evolves with system updates and may change by region.

In parallel, Starlink states on its technical page that Direct to Cell was designed to work with any LTE phone, with no hardware changes and no special apps.

In practice, however, commercial enablement occurs through partner carriers and manufacturer software, explaining why not all devices connect today.

What You Can Already Do (And What Is Still Missing)

In the current phase, the priority is essential connectivity.

In addition to text messaging (including to 911 in the US) and location sharing, T-Mobile has allowed low bandwidth data for a set of “satellite optimized” applications.

Voice calls and full navigation are still planned for future stages, as the direct-to-cell constellation grows and manufacturers release new software versions.

Starlink’s direct satellite coverage uses satellites with embedded LTE modems, which integrate with mobile networks as if they were “towers in space.”

Today, T-Mobile reports operating with over 650 direct-to-cell satellites, a number that is expected to increase as new equipment is launched into orbit.

Does It Work In Brazil?

For now, no.

In August, Anatel clarified that Starlink is not authorized to offer direct-to-cell service in the country.

Regulatory discussions are underway and there is a testing sandbox, but commercialization depends on specific licenses and local partnerships.

In the meantime, Starlink continues to offer only broadband via antenna for homes and businesses in Brazil — a distinct category from the direct-to-cell service.

How To Activate The “Hidden Feature” On Your Phone

In the United States, with a T-Mobile line and an eligible device, there’s nothing to activate: when there is no tower signal and the sky is unobstructed, the phone connects to the satellite itself.

The user can confirm through the SAT icon and the network name “T-Mobile SpaceX” or “T-Sat+Starlink” in the upper corner of the screen.

On many models, the carrier also sends an automatic message notifying the user that they are on T-Satellite.

On the iPhone with iOS 18 or later, Apple included a “Satellite” menu in Settings, with a Connection Assistant that guides device positioning and feature selection, such as Messages via satellite.

If Wi-Fi or mobile network is available, the option may not appear.

It is displayed when the iPhone detects the need to use satellite.

On Android, the experience varies by manufacturer and system version.

On compatible Samsung and Pixel models, Google Messages handles SMS/MMS sending via satellite, and some “satellite messaging/SAT mode” adjustments may appear in the Network and Internet menus when there is no terrestrial coverage.

Everything occurs automatically, with a visual indication at the top of the screen.

T-Mobile maintains step-by-step tutorials by model, including for Pixel 9, detailing message sending when connected to the satellite.

Is It Really Free?

The offer is included at no additional cost in T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond and Go5G Next plans.

In others, it can be added for a monthly fee.

In expansion phases, the carrier also enables customers from other carriers or pre-existing lines for a one-time fee.

Outside the US, conditions depend on partnerships and local rules, which is why the free access announced on social media does not apply in Brazil at this time.

How Does This Change Connectivity?

The direct-to-cell network fills in shadow zones where antennas do not reach, adding redundancy for trails, rural areas, roads, and emergency operations.

By combining low Earth orbit satellites with native resources in iOS and Android systems, the promise is to allow the user to remain communicable in previously unfeasible scenarios.

There are still limitations in speed and capacity, typical of satellite links, but the service has growing practical utility as apps and devices are optimized.
