In a move that promises to transform the automotive sector, the giant Stellantis, one of the largest car manufacturers in the world, announced an impressive $6 billion investment in the South American market to develop a new generation of engines capable of running on both gasoline and ethanol. This investment, considered the largest of its kind in the region, marks a significant shift in the industry, bringing innovations that promise to surpass all known fuel technologies, including electric and hydrogen vehicles.

Ambitious Project: The Future of Flex Ethanol Engines

The Stellantis project includes the introduction of over forty new products and a new line of “Bio-Hybrid” technologies, which combine electric motors and ethanol technology. The centerpiece of this plan is the development of flex-fuel internal combustion engines designed to use a mixture of gasoline and ethanol, allowing for a smooth transition between the two fuels.

Ethanol, a renewable fuel produced from agricultural crops such as sugarcane and corn, is already widely used in Brazil and is known to generate less carbon in its combustion compared to gasoline. Stellantis’ bet on ethanol is not just an environmentally conscious choice but also a way to leverage Brazilian expertise in the production of this biofuel.

Innovation and Sustainability in Stellantis’ New Engines

The new flex-fuel engines from Stellantis will include plug-in hybrid options, combining the flexibility of the internal combustion engine with the efficiency of an electric motor and a rechargeable battery. Expected powertrain configurations include:

  • Bio-Hybrid: Integrates an internal combustion engine with an electric motor.
  • Bio-Hybrid eDCT: Equipped with a bio-hybrid powertrain and an electric dual-clutch system.
  • Bio-Hybrid Plug-In: A plug-in accessory that allows the vehicle to be charged from the electrical grid.

These configurations promise to be more fuel-efficient and have lower emissions than conventional combustion engines while maintaining the versatility and power demanded by consumers. Of the total $300 billion in planned capital expenditures, $6 billion will be allocated to South America.

Impact and Future

The introduction of these new ethanol engines could represent a significant advance compared to hydrogen-powered vehicles (FCEVs), hampering the progress of these technologies. This project, announced several years ago, is finally coming to fruition with America playing a crucial role in the research and development of this fuel. Stellantis is positioning itself at the forefront in the race for cleaner and more efficient engines, bringing an enhanced version of methanol engines that promises to further reduce emissions.

A mono cultura da cana de açúcar prejudica a biodiversidade, isso é fato. Petróleo nem se fala. Mas a dita “indústria de automóveis” insiste em manter essas tecnologias. Sendo que temos até motores que funcionam com água do mar … vai entender…esses “amam” o planeta…
