Vitória da Conquista returned to the top of the northeastern cold by recording 13.5 °C in the middle of Bahia, while Irecê and Monteiro appeared right behind in the ranking of the region’s lowest temperatures. The record rekindled the city’s fame, which is located in a plateau area, has almost 400,000 inhabitants, and often surprises those who associate the Northeast only with intense heat

Vitória da Conquista, in the Southwest of Bahia, recorded 13.5 °C on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and had the lowest temperature among the municipalities in the Northeast that day. The mark was reported by Último Segundo, based on data from the National Institute of Meteorology, Inmet.

The cold did not appear in isolation. At another measurement point in the city, thermometers recorded 14.4 °C, a temperature sufficient to keep Conquista at the top of the regional ranking.

Next came Irecê, also in Bahia, with 14.4 °C, and Monteiro, in Paraíba, with 14.5 °C.

The episode reinforces a contrast that draws attention every year. While part of the Northeast deals with heat, drought, and high maximums in July, Vitória da Conquista maintains a routine of cold dawns, fog, and residents going out early in coats.

Bahia had the two lowest temperatures in the Northeast on the same day

The leadership of Vitória da Conquista in northeastern cold gained more weight because the second lowest temperature in the region was also recorded in Bahia. Irecê, in the Central-North of the state, appeared right behind, tied at 14.4 °C with one of Conquista’s measurements.

Monteiro, in the Paraíba Cariri, came next, with 14.5 °C. The difference between the three marks was small, but enough to put the “Bahian Switzerland” back at the center of the conversation about cold in the northeastern interior.

The expression didn’t arise by chance. Vitória da Conquista is located in a plateau area and has an altitude of 923 meters, according to statistical data from the Municipal Government. The municipality is also officially described as having a sub-humid to dry climate and an average temperature of 20 °C, well below the common image of constant heat associated with the state.

This combination helps explain the chilly mornings. The altitude favors lower temperatures, especially during early mornings with clearer skies, weak winds, and dry air. Under these conditions, the heat accumulated during the day is lost more easily at night.

The current cold was moderate compared to what the city has already recorded

Despite the repercussion, the 13.5 °C in July 2026 doesn’t come close to the more severe marks already observed in the municipality. On July 24, 2025, Vitória da Conquista reached 6.5 °C, according to records cited by the Bahian press from the Inema measurement series.

The 2025 mark entered the city’s recent memory because it was among the lowest temperatures recorded since the start of the local series. For residents accustomed to the cold, the number became a reference. For those who see Bahia as synonymous with beaches and heat, it seemed almost improbable.

The cold also has a practical impact. Clothing stores, cafes, bakeries, hotels, and services related to urban tourism tend to take advantage of the season. On the streets, the routine changes little, but the city’s appearance changes significantly, with coats, hats, scarves, and fog in the early morning.

Vitória da Conquista is not a small city. The IBGE reports that the municipality had 370,879 residents in the 2022 Census and an estimated population of 396,613 people in 2025, remaining among the largest urban centers in Bahia.

This makes the cold more visible. It is not an isolated mountain locality but a regional hub with an airport, universities, strong commerce, medical services, and daily circulation of people coming from dozens of municipalities in the Southwest of Bahia and the north of Minas Gerais.

The same system that lowered temperatures also left part of the country drier

The cold in Vitória da Conquista occurred during a period of greater atmospheric stability in various areas of the country. According to Inmet, the forecast for the week of July 6 to 13, 2026 indicated stable weather in much of the Midwest and light, isolated rain with low accumulations along the coastal strip of the Northeast, including parts of Bahia.

This type of configuration usually favors colder early mornings inland. With less cloud cover, the surface loses heat during the night. The result appears first on the thermometers before dawn, when the wind chill weighs more for those who leave early to work or study.

In the South of the country, the cold was more intense. The forecast released by Inmet for Tuesday and Wednesday indicated minimums close to 0 °C in the mountain ranges of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina and the possibility of frost in areas of the South Region. In parts of the Midwest, such as the south of Mato Grosso do Sul, the minimums also dropped.

On the other hand, low humidity became a concern in inland areas. When the air becomes dry, the risks of respiratory discomfort, wildfires, and worsening air quality increase, especially in the afternoon.
