Abandoned Here, Valued Abroad: Disdained SUV in Brazil Will Be Auctioned Among Ferraris and Rolls-Royces at the Most Glamorous Event in the U.S.
Imagine crossing an avenue in California and coming face to face with an original Lada Niva from the 1980s. It’s not a movie scene: a rare specimen of the iconic Russian SUV, one of the most robust and beloved models in Soviet automotive history, will be auctioned in August in the United States, attracting the attention of enthusiasts and collectors from around the world.
Even in the age of ultratechnological SUVs, the Niva continues to provoke fascination. Its mechanical simplicity and off-road resilience have made it a true myth, both in Russia and in markets where it was exported, such as Brazil. And this version going to auction promises to attract attention precisely for its state of preservation and its unconventional history.
A Soviet SUV on American Soil

No one knows for sure how this Lada Niva made its way to the United States, a country that has never been an official market for the model. But the fact is that it will be among the highlights of the auction held by the traditional house Gooding & Company, scheduled for August 15, during the famous Pebble Beach Auto Week, one of the most prestigious events on the global automotive calendar.

Young Ethiopian turns trash into fashion with tires, cardboard, and electrical wires, goes viral with videos that look like luxury editorials, and surpasses 5 million followers by catching the attention of artists, photographers, and designers.
“This is an opportunity to acquire a cultural artifact, a piece of Soviet history from the 1980s, at an affordable price. The definition of collector cars is constantly changing, and with appreciation and nostalgia, this could also be a valid collector car in its own right,” emphasized a Gooding representative in an interview with the official site of the auction house.
The model in question comes in a rustic beige paint job, a combination that is quite faithful to the original tones of the time. The odometer reading of 44,114 km suggests little use, although the five-digit gauge does not rule out the possibility that the car may have already surpassed 100,000 miles. In any case, the interior is surprising: the seats covered in black vinyl are in excellent condition, with no visible cracks or rips.
Pebble Beach: Showcase of the Most Desired Classics
Since 1950, charming Pebble Beach, California, has become a true temple for classic car enthusiasts. For the past 21 years, Gooding & Company has attracted an international audience of the highest caliber, offering exclusive experiences during the Pebble Beach Auto Week. It is on this sophisticated stage that the robust and spartan Niva will share space with Ferraris, Bugattis, and century-old Rolls-Royces.

A Brief History of the Lada Niva in Brazil
Although many associate the Lada Niva exclusively with the Soviet scene, the SUV also wrote an important chapter in Brazilian automotive history. With the opening of imports in 1990, AvtoVAZ, the manufacturer of the model, was one of the first foreign automakers to officially enter Brazil.
With its spartan look, permanent all-wheel drive, and affordable price, the Niva quickly won admirers among Brazilians who needed a robust vehicle to tackle trails, farms, and dirt roads. According to a report from Quatro Rodas, the model was sold alongside other Lada vehicles, such as the Laika (sedan and station wagon) and the Samara hatchback.
The Niva remained on the Brazilian market until 1997, when the brand left the country amid commercial difficulties and changes in the national automotive landscape. Nevertheless, the model left a legion of fans—so much so that it is still common to find restored Nivas at vintage car meets in Brazil.
A Legend That Doesn’t Die
Even after decades, the Lada Niva continues to be produced in Russia, now under the official name Lada Niva Legend. And it remains true to the original recipe: monocoque body, independent front suspension, and solid axle in the rear, simple engine, and mechanics prioritize durability and ease of maintenance.
At a time when global SUVs have become increasingly sophisticated and expensive, the Niva remains a symbol of resilience and authenticity in the off-road world. It’s no wonder that this specimen going to auction at Pebble Beach is likely to be contested by those who understand the value of a vehicle that, above all, is history on wheels.
