Models Compete for Leadership Among Turbocharged Compacts Focused on Efficiency, Safety, and Connectivity

Three compact SUVs with 1.0 turbo engines have become the center of attention in the Brazilian market in 2025. Volkswagen Tera, Fiat Pulse Impetus Hybrid, and Renault Kardian Première Edition are on a collision course in the competition for consumer preference.

They seek a modern, technological vehicle priced below R$ 150 thousand.

The official arrival of the Volkswagen Tera in Brazil in May 2025 marked the beginning of a new chapter in this segment. It was already occupied by established models like the Pulse and the Kardian.

Since then, practical tests and technical evaluations have revealed significant differences between the three rivals. Although they share a turbo engine and similar dimensions, they offer distinct packages of performance, technology, and comfort.

Launches Reveal Changes in Automakers’ Strategy

With a 1.0 TSI engine, the Volkswagen Tera Comfortline delivers 116 hp and 200 Nm of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The consumption figures revealed by Inmetro in May indicate 11.9 km/l in the city and 14.1 km/l on the highway. This positions the model as one of the most economical in its category.

The Fiat Pulse, facelifted in April 2025 in the Impetus Hybrid line, uses the T200 engine. It offers 118 hp and 200 Nm with a CVT transmission.

Fiat has not yet officially disclosed the consumption of the updated hybrid version. However, it bets on the smoothness of the transmission and onboard technological features, such as digital air conditioning and a 10.1” multimedia center.

The Renault Kardian, launched in February of the same year, bets on a bolder package. With 120 hp and 200 Nm, it is the only one among the three to use a dual-clutch transmission (EDC).

This transmission ensures quicker shifts and superior performance in acceleration.

Space, Finishing, and Connectivity Weigh in the Choice

In addition to the engine, interior space and the level of embedded technology have also become decisive criteria for those evaluating a compact SUV.

The Tera measures 4.19 meters in length and 2.65 m in wheelbase, with a 350-liter trunk. It delivers good ergonomics and a 100% digital dashboard with a 10” screen.

The model also includes an induction charger and six airbags as standard.

The Pulse is the smallest of the trio in length and wheelbase, with 4.10 meters and 2.53 m, respectively. Nevertheless, it provides good internal usability.

The highlight goes to the panoramic sunroof, a unique optional feature among rivals. Its trunk reportedly offers around 370 liters. However, Fiat’s official data based on the VDA standard has not yet been released.

The Kardian has 4.12 m in length and 2.60 m in wheelbase, with 358 liters of trunk space.

Internally, it features an 8” screen, wireless connectivity, and a driving assistance package. Among the features are adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and blind spot alert.

Price Differences Are Small, but Delivered Content Varies Greatly

In terms of price, all three models start from the same range.

The Volkswagen Tera Comfortline, launched in May, starts at R$ 145,990.

The Fiat Pulse Impetus Hybrid, on the other hand, costs R$ 146,990 without options. With the sunroof, the price rises to R$ 151,980.

Meanwhile, the Renault Kardian Première Edition, despite having more embedded features, maintains a price of R$ 145,990, making it a competitive option.

Industry experts point out that the Renault Kardian offers the most complete package for the base price.

Meanwhile, the Tera bets on mechanical reliability. The Pulse focuses on style and visual comfort.

Still, all three require careful evaluations, as they deliver specific proposals for different audiences.

The Ideal SUV Will Depend on the User’s Profile and Priorities

While the Tera offers a good balance between consumption, drivability, and finishing, the Pulse bets on updated aesthetics and a modern digital dashboard.

The Kardian presents itself as the most robust in active safety and interior space. It features the best trunk in the category and more technological resources without the need for options.

The Brazilian market, therefore, witnesses a well-balanced technical competition among the three models.

The consumer’s choice will directly depend on what they expect from the vehicle: comfort for urban use, efficiency for trips, or family safety.

What to Expect from the Compact SUV Segment in Brazil?

With the arrival of increasingly competitive and technological models, the segment of turbocharged compact SUVs is experiencing its most mature phase in 2025.

While larger electric and hybrid vehicles are gaining ground, automakers have been intensely investing in connectivity, active safety, and fuel economy. Thus, the goal is not only to maintain the relevance of these models but also to offer competitive advantages that make them attractive compared to new market alternatives.

According to an assessment by Autoesporte magazine published in June, the Renault Kardian may lead this phase with a balance of innovation and cost-effectiveness.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen bets on the brand’s strength. Fiat focuses on visual and connectivity differentiation.
