The Labor Market Is Experiencing Accelerated Transformation, Marked By More Demanding Young People Who Prioritize Quality Of Life, Competitive Pay, And Opportunities Linked To Education. The Old Logic Of Accepting Any Job Just To Secure Income Has Lost Ground, And Even Technical Positions Are Facing Difficulties Attracting Professionals.
Higher salaries, less grueling work schedules, and a better balance between personal life and career have weighed on employment choices. The 6×1 schedule is being avoided by young people.
This transformation, particularly noticeable after the pandemic, has changed the way candidates view the market.
In some cities in Brazil, business owners report that job openings remain vacant for months.

The planet’s largest trade agreement has just come into effect, uniting 31 countries and 720 million people in a US$22 trillion free trade zone. Brazilian agribusiness celebrates billions in opportunities, but the national industry trembles before the avalanche of European products ready to invade the market.
Companies attribute the difficulty to a change in workers’ behavior, who have begun to prioritize quality of life.
The 6×1 work schedule has been pointed out as one of the main obstacles.
Many candidates say they won’t accept jobs that require work on Sundays, holidays, or from Monday to Saturday without more balanced time off.
Open Positions
A report from G1 showed the case of business owner Rachid Sleiman, who feels the impact of these changes directly.
Having run a vehicle shop in downtown Mogi das Cruzes for 41 years, he has had two vacant salesperson positions for six months.
“In five years, I have only hired one person who stayed. The others leave within 15, 20, at most 30 days, always without a defined reason,” he reported.
Other sectors are facing the same problem. A traditional bakery in Parque Monte Líbano has stopped opening on Sundays due to not finding employees willing to work that day.
According to Valterli Martinez, president of the Retail Trade Union of Mogi das Cruzes and Region (Sincomércio), there are on average 30 to 50 open positions in the commerce sector of Alto Tietê.
The expectation, he said, is that in September the sector will open between 1,800 and 2,500 temporary job opportunities. This number is expected to grow until December, driven by dates like Children’s Day, Black Friday, and Christmas.
“The commerce sector has been facing difficulties filling positions, especially in roles related to customer service, cashier, and sales. This reality intensified in the post-pandemic period when many workers migrated to other sectors or to self-employed activities. Since then, the challenge of finding and retaining qualified professionals for retail has been constant,” Martinez stated.
To reduce the impacts, Sincomércio created a program that connects business owners with job seekers. Additionally, it offers training in partnership with Sebrae and Sesc.
Change Of Mindset
Building a long career is no longer the main priority.
The advancement of technology and the possibility that many professions may disappear in a few years have led workers to question whether it is worth being tied to a stable career path.
This change in mindset is not limited to those with higher education. Even roles that have always required long hours, such as 6×1 schedules, are no longer easily accepted.
The focus is on balance, less grueling conditions, and more quality time away from the professional environment.
The lack of candidates is not limited to commerce. In sectors like mechatronics, for example, there are opportunities with a 5×2 schedule, without the requirement for prior experience, only technical training.
Still, many reject the offers or only accept with salaries starting at R$ 3,000.
Job turnover has become common in almost all segments.
Today, changing jobs for small differences in pay is increasingly common, while the search for stability has become a greater concern for employers than for workers.
