Putin Announces Easter Ceasefire in Ukraine War and Says Measure Will Serve as a Test to Assess Kiev’s Willingness to Negotiate. Zelensky Denounces Russian Drones
On Saturday, the 19th, the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, announced a temporary ceasefire in the war against Ukraine. The measure, announced through the official Kremlin channel on Telegram, was described as a “Easter truce” and is set to last until Monday, the 21st.
According to the message published, the ceasefire began at 6 PM on Saturday, Russia local time — 12 PM in Brasília — and will last until midnight on Monday, also on Moscow time, corresponding to 6 PM on Sunday, the 20th, in Brazil.
Putin Orders Ceasefire
Putin stated that the decision for the Easter truce was made for “humanitarian reasons.” The announcement was made directly to the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov. “I order that all military actions be paused during this period.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began with the invasion of Ukrainian territory in February 2022. Since then, few ceasefires have been established, and many of them were not fully respected.
Expectation About Ukrainian Reaction
Still in the official statement, the Kremlin said: “We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow our example.” However, it also warned of the risk of non-compliance on the part of Ukraine and requested that Russian troops be prepared to respond to any provocations.
Putin also recalled previous incidents and accused the Kiev government of having violated agreements that prevented attacks on energy infrastructure more than a hundred times. “We know that the Kiev regime, as you reported to me, violated more than 100 times the agreements not to attack energy infrastructure. Therefore, I ask you to maintain extreme vigilance and be prepared to respond immediately and decisively,” he instructed.
Easter Truce: A Test for Peace Negotiations
According to Putin, the truce will serve as an indicator of Ukraine’s willingness to resume diplomatic talks. He stated that the response to the ceasefire will show “how sincere” the Kiev government’s intention is to negotiate and respect possible future agreements.
The message, according to information from g1, also emphasizes that this period will serve to understand “to what extent the Kiev regime is sincerely willing and prepared to respect the agreements.”
Zelensky Confirms Drones Were Detected
Less than an hour after the ceasefire began, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, posted on social media that his country identified Russian attack drones flying over Ukrainian territory. The alert was made 45 minutes after the official start of the truce.
“Drones in our skies reveal Putin’s true attitude toward Easter and human life,” Zelensky wrote on platform X (formerly Twitter).
Russia Denies Violation and Reaffirms Commitment
Even after the Ukrainian accusation, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that it would continue to respect the ceasefire, as long as it is also maintained by Ukraine.
The declaration from both sides shows that the ceasefire, although temporary, is still surrounded by uncertainties.
