Intercity Train Project São Paulo-Sorocaba Provides Fast Connection Between Cities, Reducing Travel Time to 60 Minutes
The São Paulo State Government announced that the Intercity Train (TIC) West Axis project, which will connect São Paulo to Sorocaba, is progressing and is expected to have a bidding process in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the São Paulo Secretariat of Partnerships and Investments. The train will be an alternative to road transport, reducing travel time between the cities to 60 minutes and accommodating an estimated demand of 50,000 passengers per day, according to a study by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA).
Details of the Intercity Train Project São Paulo-Sorocaba
The TIC West Axis route will be approximately 100 km long, using part of the old railway network between the two cities. According to the Via Trolebus portal, the line will feature four stations, namely Água Branca (São Paulo), São Roque, and two stations in Sorocaba. The rail transport will significantly reduce travel time, considering that the current drive takes about 110 minutes and by bus 130 minutes, according to a survey by the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT).
Investments and Benefits for Mobility
The TIC São Paulo-Sorocaba is part of the SP on Tracks Program, launched by the São Paulo government in 2024, which includes 40 railway projects, including expansions of subways, VLTs, and urban trains. According to the Metropolitan Transport Secretariat, total investments in these projects amount to approximately R$ 194 billion and have the potential to generate around 150,000 direct and indirect jobs.

São Paulo purchased 44 Chinese trains for R$ 3.1 billion and deployed them on the Blue, Green, and Red metro lines, accelerated the expansion of the Green Line 2, and made CRRC a central piece in the largest railway renovation in the capital in decades.
In addition to reducing travel time, the new train promises to ease traffic on the Castello Branco Highway, the main route connecting São Paulo and Sorocaba, which currently suffers from frequent congestion, according to a study published in 2024 by the São Paulo Traffic Engineering Company (CET-SP). The modernization of rail transport will also contribute to reducing carbon emissions, promoting a positive environmental impact.
Integration with Other Transportation Modes
The TIC West Axis will be integrated with other public transport lines. According to information from Correio Popular, the initial station will be in Água Branca, a strategic railway hub that will allow connection with CPTM lines, the São Paulo Metro, and other intercity train projects that are under development. Mobility experts, such as urban planner Sérgio Avelleda, former Secretary of Transportation for the São Paulo capital, emphasize that this integration will enhance the efficiency of the public transport network and encourage the migration of passengers from buses and cars to trains.
Next Steps and Timeline
Public hearings regarding the TIC West Axis are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2025, with the publication of the bidding notice in the third quarter of the same year. The auction is set for the fourth quarter of 2025, and the contract signing is expected to occur in early 2026, according to information from the São Paulo Metropolitan Transport Secretariat. The expectation of the São Paulo government is that construction will begin in 2026, with completion anticipated between 2029 and 2030.
