UFRGS is launching a free distance learning course that promises to transform science education in Brazil. Aimed at elementary school teachers, the program combines theory and practice to train more prepared and innovative educators for the 21st century.

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul offers a postgraduate course for Basic Education teachers, with an emphasis on science teaching and innovative methodology.

Basic Education teachers who dream of improving their teaching practices in Science subjects now have an unmissable opportunity: Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) has open registration for the Specialization in Science Teaching – “Science is 10!”, offered free of charge and completely online.

The course, which is part of the Open University of Brazil (UAB) program, in partnership with CAPES and MEC, offers 160 places in different locations in Rio Grande do Sul..

Registrations are open until the day 11 May 2025, and the selection process will be carried out through curriculum analysis.

The training lasts 18 months and is aimed exclusively at licensed teachers who work in the classroom.

Free course aimed at basic school teachers

The specialization offers a practical and updated approach to teaching science in the final years of elementary school., focusing on innovation in pedagogical methodologies.

With a workload of 480 hours, the course is divided into theoretical and practical modules, including the mandatory completion of a Course Conclusion Project (TCC).

Although the course is mostly online, there are mandatory face-to-face meetings at face-to-face support centers, which allows a more direct exchange between teachers and students, in addition to contact with regional education realities.

Distribution of vacancies by hub

The 160 specialization vacancies are distributed among the following municipalities:

  • Porto Alegre: 100 vacancies
  • Deep step: 30 vacancies
  • Imbe, Gramado and Santana do Livramento: 10 vacancies each

Half of the places are allocated to Universal Access (AU) and the other half to so-called Affirmative Actions, aimed at candidates who self-declare as black, brown, indigenous, quilombola, people with disabilities, transvestites and transgender.

The inclusion policy follows national guidelines to ensure diversity and equity in access to higher education.

Who can apply

According to the notice, candidates can apply for the course licensed teachers in the areas of Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or related areas, with a diploma recognized by the MEC, who are currently working as teachers, preferably in the public education system.

It is mandatory to prove performance in the classroom, in addition to having access to a computer with internet. to follow online activities.

The candidate must also indicate one of the available face-to-face centers, which he/she will need to attend periodically throughout the training.

Initiative seeks to enhance and update science teaching

The “Science is 10!” course is part of a larger public policy to promote scientific education in Brazil, aiming to train teachers to deal with contemporary classroom challenges.

In addition to promoting a quality continuing education, the initiative seeks to directly impact student learning by allowing teachers to incorporate more effective and motivating practices in science teaching.

According to the Institute of Basic Health Sciences (ICBS) at UFRGS, which coordinates the course, the pedagogical proposal was carefully designed to connect theory and practice, expanding teachers’ critical capacity and promoting a more meaningful education for students in the public school system.

The registration period started on the day April 8, 2025 and ends on May 11, 2025.

The selection process takes place in a single phase, based on the analysis of the candidate's curriculum..

The score will be awarded according to objective criteria previously defined in the notice.

In the event of a tie, tiebreaker criteria will also be specified.

The preliminary classification will be released on a date after the analysis of the resumes, with the right to deadline for filing appeals, following the schedule detailed in the official UFRGS notice.
