Investments
Immediately after this renovation of Blast Furnace 2, Usiminas’ management will start preparing for the major shutdown that will occur starting in 2021.
Thiago Toscano, president of Indi, the investment promotion agency of the state of Minas Gerais, spoke about the importance of increasing the mill’s capacity, “With this, Usiminas will be able to increase its production capacity already in 2020. The government agreed to defer the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) for imported parts without national similar. This was another step towards the major investment of the steel mill in the coming years, which is the renovation of Blast Furnace 3.”
Blast Furnace 1 consumed R$ 80 million last year in renovation works, but the mill did not halt production; together, Blast Furnaces 1 and 2 produce 4 thousand tons of pig iron daily.
Blast Furnace 3, which will shut down for maintenance in 2021, produces 7 thousand tons of pig iron daily on its own, almost double the other two units.
Blast Furnace 3 has also been operating for 20 years, and the intention is to extend its lifespan by another 20 years. The total investment in renovations is projected to be R$ 1.234 billion, confirming Usiminas’ confidence in the market recovery in the coming years.
