Petrobras Reported That It Informed Authorities of the Incident and That the Causes of the Leak Are Being Investigated, but Rnest Is Operating Normally
On the night of this Monday, August 26, an oil leak and water was recorded at the Abreu e Lima Refinery (Rnest), in the Suape Complex, in Ipojuca, in the Greater Recife area. According to Petrobras, the product reached a creek that runs within the company’s boundaries. In June of this year, the Abreu e Lima refinery was put up for sale by the state-owned company; the process will be divided into two phases and is expected to finish in 2021.
Petrobras reported that the leak occurred at the industrial waste treatment station of the Rnest and that as soon as the leak was identified, safety and emergency teams were immediately dispatched for containment and repair of the affected area. The leak was controlled on Monday night, according to Petrobras.

According to CPRH, three cubic meters of oil and two cubic meters of water were involved. Due to the leak, two stretches of the expressway cutting through the Suape Industrial and Port Complex were closed so that the suction service for the material could be carried out. Teams from Suape and CPRH are monitoring the work.
In a statement, Petrobras informed that it communicated the incident to the authorities and that the causes of the leak are being investigated, but that Rnest is operating normally. According to the general coordinator of the Workers’ Union in the Oil Industry of Pernambuco (Sindipetro-PE), Rogério Almeida, the substance reached an area of mangrove.
The type of oil that leaked was not disclosed, but according to the Suape Complex, the material is not flammable. The port also stated, in a separate note, that the refinery is now working on containment and recovery of the oil.
The note sent by the Port of Suape also states that “the causes of the leak will be analyzed by a multidisciplinary team from Rnest as well as by CPRH, the environmental control agency that is taking the necessary measures,” and further added that they are still assessing the extent of the leak and the actions taken by the refinery to determine whether or not a fine is applicable.
In a statement, CPRH asserts that the damages from the leak are being evaluated. “The problem occurred in the water and oil separator box with an overflow volume of 5 cubic meters, consisting of 3 cubic meters of oil and 2 cubic meters of water,” says the agency in the text.
According to CPRH, the refinery “installed seven containment barriers at the site, with trucks performing suction of the floating material.”
CPRH states that work at the site continues throughout the afternoon of yesterday, the 27th, to verify the extent of the leak. “However, so far it is possible to affirm that the material is confined,” states the note.
