New sedan developed by SAIC Volkswagen debuts with plug-in hybrid engine, 35.4 km/l consumption, and urban semi-autonomous technology
Volkswagen officially introduced the new ID. Era 5S to the Chinese market. The sedan was developed by the joint venture between the German automaker and SAIC, a Chinese automotive giant.
The launch represents an important change in the strategy of the ID. family, a line globally known for the brand’s fully electric vehicles.
According to information released by Volkswagen, the new model debuts with a plug-in hybrid system, breaking the logic adopted by the manufacturer until now.

The electrified system allows for up to 160 kilometers of range in fully electric mode. The combined range exceeds 2,000 kilometers in the Chinese CLTC cycle.
Data released by the automaker highlights another relevant feature. Even with the battery discharged, the sedan records an approved consumption of 2.82 liters per 100 kilometers.
The index represents approximately 35.4 km/l, positioning the model among the most efficient projects presented by the brand in recent years.
Volkswagen changes the course of the ID. family with plug-in hybrid system
The main differentiator of the ID. Era 5S is precisely the plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Until then, the ID. nomenclature was used exclusively for Volkswagen’s electric vehicles.
The arrival of the new sedan to the Chinese market completely changes this perception.
Executives from the automaker emphasized that the model’s development occurred specifically to meet the demands of the Asian consumer, especially in the segment of technological sedans with long range.
The project also expands Volkswagen’s presence in one of the most competitive markets in the global automotive sector.
Sedan bets on more conservative look and generous dimensions
The Volkswagen ID. Era 5S measures 4.83 meters in length and 2.76 meters in wheelbase.
The dimensions place the model directly in the segment of large electrified sedans.
Cleaner lines and balanced proportions define the car’s appearance. The aesthetic proposal follows the latest identity of the German manufacturer.
LED headlights connected by horizontal light bars appear both at the front and rear.
The visual set resembles the standard previously presented in the SUV ID. Era 9X.
Less futuristic profiles also draw attention. The sedan bets on a more conservative appearance when compared to other electrified models from Volkswagen.
Blue LEDs on mirrors indicate semi-autonomous driving
Rearview mirrors equipped with blue LEDs appear among the main technological features of the model.
According to Volkswagen, the light signals serve to alert pedestrians and other drivers about the activation of assisted driving systems.
The ID. Era 5S will also be the first sedan from the brand prepared to operate with advanced semi-autonomous assistance in complex urban environments.
The manufacturer highlighted that the model was designed to handle high-density urban scenarios, a common reality in large Chinese cities.
Cloud-connected intelligent cockpit reinforces digital focus
Definitive images of the interior have not yet been revealed by Volkswagen.
Even so, the automaker confirmed that the sedan will feature a fully cloud-connected intelligent cockpit.
The proposal follows the Asian market trend of centralizing digital services and real-time assistance features within the vehicle.
Driving data, connectivity, and intelligent systems are expected to function in an integrated manner in the new sedan.
The launch of the ID. Era 5S shows a Volkswagen willing to adapt traditional strategies to enhance competitiveness in the Chinese market.
The change in the ID. line raises an important question for the global automotive sector: will other markets also be able to receive future plug-in hybrid models from the ID. family?
