The Volkswagen Alert
Volkswagen recommended that owners of Atlas (2020-2021) and Atlas Cross Sport (2020-2024) SUVs do not use the front seat for passengers, due to life-threatening risks related to airbag failure.
According to the company’s statement, the passenger airbag may not deploy in the event of an accident, leaving occupants vulnerable.
According to Volkswagen, a warning on the car’s dashboard is activated when there are real problems with the airbag system.
However, the company emphasizes that drivers should avoid transporting passengers in the front seat until the problem is resolved. Driving alone or with passengers in the back seats is safe.

Volkswagen’s Solution
To fix the problem, Volkswagen will replace the passenger presence detection system and adjust the sensors that control the deployment of the front passenger airbag.
This measure aims to ensure the safety and confidence of drivers and passengers of the affected SUVs.
Volkswagen Atlas: The American Giant
In the U.S., the Volkswagen Atlas is a standout SUV, considered the top of the brand’s lineup.
It comes equipped with a 2.0 TSI turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, with options for 4MOTION all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive.
Previously, the model had a 2.5 VR6 engine, which was discontinued after the last visual redesign.
Global Variants
Interestingly, in China, the Volkswagen Atlas is marketed as Teramont, while the Cross Sport is known as Teramont X.
These differences reflect Volkswagen’s regional market strategies, adapting its vehicles to local preferences.
Impact in Brazil
It is worth noting that neither the Volkswagen Atlas nor the Atlas Cross Sport have been sold in Brazil, so Brazilian consumers are not affected by this recall.
However, the situation raises questions about the reliability and safety of the German automaker’s vehicles. This recall news has generated various reactions among owners of the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs.
Many expressed concern about the safety of their vehicles, while others showed confidence in Volkswagen to resolve the issue quickly.
As mentioned, this is not the first recall of Volkswagen’s SUVs related to airbags. In a previous situation, the automaker also had to issue a recall to correct similar problems.
This recurrence of problems may impact consumers’ perceptions of the brand.
