The Minister of Mines and Energy Signed Yesterday the Authorization for the Implementation of the GNA II Thermal Power Plant in the Port Complex
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Moreira Franco, signed yesterday the authorization for the implementation of the GNA II Thermal Power Plant, developed by Gás Natural Açu at the Port of Açu, in São João da Barra (RJ). The project will have an installed capacity of 1,673 MW, enough to supply seven million households. With this grant, the Port of Açu becomes the largest thermoelectric complex in Latin America. The plant is part of the Açu Gas Hub, a logistical solution for receiving, processing, consuming, and transporting natural gas produced in the Campos Basin (RJ) and Santos (SP), as well as the import and storage of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
Jobs and Projects
According to Magela, the construction of this second thermoelectric plant (GNA II) will begin in 2019, with a projected expectation of 2,500 to 3,000 hires at the peak of the project, positively impacting the economy of the Northern Fluminense Region.

GNA I, which is already being built by Andrade Gutierrez, will be capable of producing 1,300 MW of energy, in addition to a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal that will process more than 20 million m³. According to the engineers leading the project, when the construction of GNA II begins next year, GNA I will already be well advanced in its works.
The first thermoelectric plant is expected to start operating in 2021, and the second, in 2023. The gas terminal is expected to start operating in just over a year.
The associated companies involved in the project are Prumo Logística, Siemens, and BP (British Petroleum). The budget is set at 8 billion reais to carry out this project, which will make it the largest thermoelectric complex in Latin America, with a total installed capacity of 3,000 MW.
