This Weekend, a Spill of About 40,000 Liters of Diesel Fuel Occurred in Southern Chile, on a Small Island Called Guarelo, in Patagonia.
The spill occurred at a terminal on Guarelo Island, in Patagonia, during an operation by the mining company CAP, which is part of one of the largest mining groups in Chile. After receiving the emergency call made by the company itself, the Chilean Navy mobilized to mitigate and control the damage caused by the leak.
Several units were promptly sent to control the affected area and minimize the damage. One of the vessels sent was the “Elicura” and the patrol boat “Marinero Fuentealba.”

15 cargo planes per month will depart from China directly to Ceará loaded with equipment, and the most brilliant stroke of this plan is what the Ceará government wants to put inside these planes on the return trip so as not to waste any flight.
By this Sunday, July 28, 2019, about 15,000 liters of water from the contaminated area had already been contained, according to the Navy.
CAP issued a statement informing that it will cooperate with the entire investigation and that in addition to the standard control and monitoring measures already in place, it has initiated “a process of permanent monitoring in the area.”
The causes or reasons for the spill are still unknown, thus local authorities have opened an investigation to clarify what happened and determine the causes and those responsible for this spill.
The location where the spill occurred houses a large and diverse ecosystem with flora of rare and endangered species; this region is one of the clearest water areas on the planet and it is estimated that the marine ecosystem will be severely affected by this spill.
Greenpeace Chile issued a statement warning that the incident may have affected the ecosystem in a devastating and irrecoverable way.
