After the accusations that the government of Alberto Fernández was hindering all negotiations for the reestablishment of the flight between the archipelagos and Brazil, which was interrupted due to the pandemic, Argentina was harshly criticized by the government of the Falkland Islands.
According to a report from Clarín, the Islanders announced that they would seek alternatives that did not involve “overflights from Argentina.” Before the pandemic, there were two regular routes departing from the Malvinas Islands: one from Punta Arenas (Chile) and another from São Paulo (Brazil), which made stops in Argentina, in Río Gallegos and Córdoba. All these flights necessarily passed over Argentine territory.
In July 2020, a flight directed to the island that departed from Santiago, Chile, was reestablished; however, the São Paulo – Mount Pleasant route was still on hold.

Mark Pollard, a member of the Legislative Assembly, condemned the Argentine decision and stated that they will not discuss “a direct flight to Buenos Aires or the possibility of the Argentine national airline [Aerolíneas Argentinas] entering the Malvinas.”
The contract with LATAM will be extended, with the hope that all flights from São Paulo to the Falklands can be resumed when discussions become possible again.
