At Just 16 Years Old, Young Man from Itajaí Developed Award-Winning Sustainable Filter. Today, at 21, He Studies in China with a Scholarship Won for His Project
An invention created by a young man from Santa Catarina is gaining international prominence. Gabriel Fernandes, from Itajaí, developed a system for filtering microplastics when he was just 16 years old. Today, at 21, he is studying Engineering and Computer Science at New York University Shanghai, in China, after receiving a scholarship.
The idea arose from a concern for the environment. Gabriel created a filter capable of efficiently removing microplastics from water. His project received recognition at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize 2021, where he won the popular vote prize with over 26,000 votes.
The system created by the student combines sustainable materials that capture microscopic particles without reducing water flow. The technology is low-cost, highly efficient, and easily adaptable to different contexts.

The invention gained attention for providing a simple alternative with a focus on sustainability. Among the highlighted points are the ease of implementation and the use of accessible materials. This allows the filter to be applied in diverse regions and types of water systems.
International recognition came not only with the award but also with the opportunity to study abroad. The scholarship at NYU Shanghai will allow Gabriel to deepen his knowledge and further develop his technology.
Currently, the student continues his studies in China, always focused on Brazil’s potential in sustainable technological solutions. His work serves as an example for other young people interested in science and innovation.
Gabriel’s journey illustrates how simple and well-executed ideas can create real impact. The combination of youth, creativity, and environmental commitment can pave the way for important opportunities in the future.
