Multifunctional Equipment Used in the United Kingdom Allows Tree Removal with Risk of Fall Without Human Contact, Reducing Costs, Time and Risks in Forestry and Urban Operations

A state-of-the-art tree feller with 35-meter reach, 360-degree rotation, and integrated hydraulic saw is being used by arboriculture companies in the United Kingdom to accelerate the removal of dead or dangerous trees, especially in urban areas and along highways, focusing on safety, efficiency, and reducing environmental impact.

Technology Transforms Risk Tree Removal

The company Tivoli, specialized in public green space management, recently invested in a Merlo Roto 50.35 S Plus model equipped with the Westtech CS750 grab saw, capable of cutting trunks up to 28 inches in diameter. The equipment acts as a true tree feller, allowing complete dismantling of trees from the ground, without the need for climbing or aerial platforms.

Combining crane, manipulator, and saw functions, the system ensures that branches and trunk sections are removed accurately and without the risk of uncontrolled falls. The remote control of the equipment allows operations in hard-to-reach places and with restrictions, such as highways with heavy traffic or steep terrain, minimizing operators’ exposure to danger.

In Addition to Safety, the New System Offers Agility

During a demonstration in Ayrshire, United Kingdom, the tree feller managed to remove a large tree in a few minutes, in an operation that would normally take an entire day. The equipment was used on a dual carriageway where only partial road closure was allowed, without compromising local traffic.

Operational Efficiency and Reduced Team Involvement

With the use of the new system, Tivoli replaced teams of up to 10 people with just three operators and reduced work time by up to 80%, even in areas with a high risk of falls or trees compromised by diseases like “ash dieback,” which affects millions of ash trees in the United Kingdom.

The investment also allows for immediate processing of waste on site, using attached chippers and support excavators. The removed wood is chipped and taken away with minimal impact on the ground, preserving gardens, sidewalks, and public roads.

Operator Highlights Versatility and Safety of Mobile Cabin

According to operator Max Milligan, experienced in arboriculture equipment, the 20-degree tilting cabin provides better visibility during cutting, while the remote control allows for precise operation when necessary. “The machine reduces the need for working at heights, eliminates risks, and speeds up the entire process,” he stated.

Another important feature of the Merlo model is the ability to limit the rotation angle to avoid collisions with surrounding vehicles, which was essential during operations on busy highways. The system ensures safety even with the equipment operating close to traffic lanes.

Ideal Solution for Urban Greening and Risk Zones

The tree feller has been widely applied in urban areas and rural properties where there are trees compromised by age, pests, or climate changes. The precision control and the strength of the saw allow for rapid interventions in regions where it would be unfeasible or risky to climb trees or use aerial platforms.

The success of the new technology has led the company to expand its fleet of equipment and plan to hire more professionals, consolidating the creation of the Tivoli Trees unit, geared exclusively towards high-performance mechanized arboriculture.

The information was disclosed in a detailed article from the British magazine essentialARB, which followed a complete operation of Tivoli at the Auchincruive Estate property, including testimonials from operators and technical analysis of the equipment’s efficiency.
