Recent Paving Works by the Federal Government’s Ministry of Infrastructure Caused Immediate Effect on Freight Reduction, and Ports Must Adapt to Large Volumes of Cargo at Their Terminals
The Minister of Infrastructure of the Federal Government, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, in an interview with the YouTube channel Vira News on 02/19/2020, stated that he was already aware of the challenges to be faced during his management. After all, there were three consecutive quarters of decline in the Brazilian GDP and unprecedented fiscal compression, a fact that limited the government’s investment capacity.

However, Tarcísio ends up praising President Jair Bolsonaro for his courage in providing autonomy not only to himself but to all ministers to compose and manage their teams with technical criteria, with specialists in all areas. After a long time in the country’s recent history, it now allows for the establishment of a plan for the next four years (until the end of 2023).

He adds that this entire plan is being strictly followed by the Federal Government. In his words, for 2020, everything is progressing rapidly and on time, maintaining this goal also for 2021 and 2022.
Armed Forces
” We are utilizing the capacity of the Armed Forces, their competence, resources, and experience for many important works”, says Tarcísio.
BR-163 (one of the busiest roads in Brazil and with many infrastructure problems, logistically speaking) was completed after about 20 years of turmoil. The flow of products, grains, and other inputs was a major issue, especially during the rainy season, which caused mudslides and constant dangers due to being in a mountainous region.
The army and the government developed a planning and monitoring effort, with technicians who know the Amazon region well.
The paving was completed up to the Port of Miritituba, which is the main destination for cargo, leading to an immediate reduction in freight prices. A 40-ton truck, for example, which charged an average of 8,400 reais for freight, is now charging around 6,500 reais (-26%). The number of trips has also increased, from 3 trips per month to 6 or 7 monthly. Ports are having to adapt to meet this sudden large demand for cargo.
