“The joint effort of labor and employer unions is to make the Federal Government of the State aware of the need to relax the current decree that intensified emergency measures in Amazonas, in order to allow the return of activities in the Construction Industry, since thousands of workers depend on their jobs to support their families. We cannot stop generating job openings. The return to work would be according to both parties and maintaining prevention measures such as physical distancing, mask usage, hygiene, and all necessary precautions to avoid contagion of the class by COVID-19, as halted construction projects do not preserve jobs but rather contribute to mass layoffs,” concluded Sassá.
Councilman Sassá hopes that our Federal Government responds to this request with the utmost urgency, so we do not face mass layoffs of these workers.

Current State of the Construction Industry in Brazil
Between 2004 and 2013, this market showed constant growth, with positive results for the economy. However, starting in 2014, it experienced declines throughout the sector. Its recovery only began in 2019, when it started to present positive results again.
At the beginning of 2020, the projection from the Union of the Construction Industry of the State of São Paulo was a 3% increase in the sector’s GDP. However, with the economic crisis caused by COVID-19, there is a possibility that the increase will be smaller due to the impacts felt in nearly all segments.
Despite the difficulties faced by the sector in the first half of the year due to the pandemic, the second half already showed a positive recovery. In August, the construction industry reported increased performance and excellent results, already surpassing the pre-pandemic level.
Additionally, according to the President of the Brazilian Chamber of Industry of Construction (CBIC), José Carlos Martins, the construction industry is seen by the government as one of the main aids for the country to emerge from the economic crisis.
The data indicate that the current moment of the sector requires extensive market research to analyze new perspectives for the future. Although the pandemic surprised business owners, many are already adapting to the new reality, prepared to face the challenges posed by the crisis. Among these, the Construction Industry is a segment that is ready to tackle this scenario.
