Aggreko Executive Stated That “The Energy Transition Needs Lithium to Happen Concretely”.
The Aggreko, a leader in energy solutions, attended Brazil Lithium Summit 2024, an event held in Belo Horizonte that brought together key players in the energy transition sector. The meeting served as a platform for strategic discussions on lithium development in Brazil.
Brazil has been gaining a prominent role in the transition of its energy matrix towards sustainable sources. In 2023, Brazil had a record 93% of clean energy generation. In this context, lithium mining emerges as a crucial activity to further boost these positive numbers. Currently, Brazil accounts for 2.3% of global lithium production, with expectations to reach up to 5% of the global total by 2026.
Job and Income Generation
“This growth not only reinforces the country’s position in the international clean energy scenario but also stimulates local economic and technological development, favoring job creation and attracting investments in sustainable infrastructure. Furthermore, lithium exploration is vital to meet the growing demand for high-capacity batteries, essential for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, consolidating Brazil as a strategic player in the global value chain of the energy transition,” said Elizangela Santana, Business Development Manager for the Mining Segment at Aggreko.

Brazil has minerals, clean energy, and a waiting market, but it could miss a billion-dollar opportunity if it doesn’t speed up the race for green minerals, while the steel industry seeks to reduce emissions.
Lithium Gains Attention as a Key Mineral for Achieving the Energy Transition
At the center of the discussion on the energy transition, lithium stands out as a key mineral for achieving this crucial change. According to Elizangela, “the energy transition needs lithium to happen”.
Her statement echoes the importance of lithium as an essential element in the production of high-capacity batteries, driving electric mobility and renewable energy storage systems. Without lithium, the viability of the energy transition to clean and sustainable sources becomes a challenging endeavor due to its intermittency.
Surpassing Iron and Gold? National Lithium Production Rises from 11th to 3rd Place in Terms of Revenue
Highlighting the exponential growth of the national lithium production, the executive emphasized Brazil’s rise from 11th to 3rd place in terms of revenue between 2021 and 2023, trailing only iron and gold. “This promising scenario situates Brazil in a strategic location for research, development, and innovation in the mineral sector.
The abundance of natural resources and investment in logistics infrastructure reinforce the national capacity to attract foreign investments and strengthen existing partnerships. This conducive environment drives the creation of new jobs, consolidates the local economy, and reinforces Brazil’s leadership in the global arena of sustainable technologies”, she concluded.
The Brazil Lithium Summit 2024 demonstrated that Brazil is ready to take a leadership role in the era of lithium and the energy transition. With the support of companies like Aggreko, the country is building a more sustainable and prosperous future for all.
