Alckmin Announces Investments to Unlock the Paraguay River Waterway and Promises to Boost Brazil’s Economy and Logistics.
Government Plans to Unlock the Paraguay River Waterway
The acting president, Geraldo Alckmin, announced on Friday (24) that the federal government is studying new investments in the Paraguay River waterway, considered vital for the export of agricultural production from Mato Grosso and for strengthening the Brazilian economy.
The statement was made during the inauguration of the Export Processing Zone (ZPE) in Cáceres (MT), a city located 220 km from Cuiabá. According to Alckmin, the initiative aims to improve transportation logistics, reduce costs, and attract strategic investments to the Midwest region.
Paraguay River Waterway Is a Priority for Regional Development
During a press conference, Alckmin emphasized that the Paraguay River waterway is essential for the integration of Brazilian logistics modes — connecting road, rail, and water transport.

“This is the segment that needs investment. I will talk to the Minister of Ports. We need economic efficiency, reduce costs, and integrate modes. The Paraguay waterway is essential,” stated the acting president.
The stretch between Cáceres and Corumbá (MS), currently halted due to siltation of the river, is the main bottleneck to be addressed. Therefore, the government plans investments in dredging and port infrastructure, focusing on reactivating water transport to Nova Palmira, Uruguay.
Strategic Connection with Mercosur Countries
The waterway connection between the Port of Cáceres and the Port of Nova Palmira was established in 1998 through the River Transport Agreement of the Rio de la Plata Basin, which includes Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, and Bolivia.
Thus, the Paraguay River solidifies itself as one of the main logistical corridors of Mercosur, expanding the potential for grain and mineral exports from Brazil.
Therefore, unlocking this waterway is more than an infrastructure project — it is a strategic project for regional integration and economic expansion.
A Natural Asset of Economic and Environmental Value
With a length of 680 km, the Paraguay River is a natural asset of enormous economic and environmental importance.
It divides into two deep, winding arms, surrounded by areas of great biodiversity, such as the Taiamã Island, the Guirá State Park, and the Pantanal Mato-grossense National Park.
The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) manages these areas and works to preserve the ecological mosaic they form.
Therefore, any intervention in the river requires a balance between economic progress and environmental sustainability.
Waterway Can Revolutionize the Brazilian Economy
The government believes that reactivating the Paraguay River waterway will have direct impacts on agriculture and the national industry, generating jobs and increasing the competitiveness of exports.
Moreover, the measure can reduce freight costs, improve national logistics, and attract new investments.
With Brazil seeking to strengthen its sustainable transportation infrastructure, the waterway project presents itself as one of the biggest logistical opportunities of the decade.
The Future of Green Logistics in Brazil
While the President Lula fulfills his agenda in Asia, Alckmin highlights that the federal government remains steadfast in the agenda of economic integration and sustainability.
If the government executes the plan, the Paraguay River waterway will transform Brazilian logistics, unite efficiency and environmental preservation, and drive sustainable economic growth. This initiative will place Brazil in a new era of investment and innovation.
