Anvisa Prohibits Condensed Milk After Microbiological Test and Seizes Supplements for False Advertising and Unknown Origin.

According to Agência Brasil, on the last Monday, 2, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) ordered the precautionary prohibition of a batch of condensed milk and the seizure of irregular food supplements.

The measure targets the product La Vaquita and the supplements Glicojax and Durasil, following sanitary inspections and laboratory analyses that indicated health risks.

The decision applies nationwide and aims to protect consumers from potential poisoning and misleading information.

Anvisa Acts After Tests on Condensed Milk

Anvisa prohibited the semiskimmed condensed milk from the brand La Vaquita after the batch failed microbiological tests. The analysis was conducted by the Noel Nutels Central Public Health Laboratory during an official inspection.

The test detected levels exceeding the allowed amount of Coagulase Positive Staphylococci. This bacteria, known as Staphylococcus aureus, can cause food poisoning when present in large quantities, leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms.

Discrepancy About the Origin of the Product

Initially, Anvisa associated La Vaquita condensed milk with the company Apti Alimentos.

However, the manufacturer stated in an official note that the product is not part of its portfolio and that there was a mistake in identifying the origin.

Despite the discrepancy, the prohibition remains in effect until all information is clarified. In the meantime, the consumption of the condensed milk from the prohibited batch is not recommended.

Supplements with False Advertising Come Under Scrutiny

In addition to the food item, Anvisa seized the supplements Glicojax and Durasil. According to the agency, both have unknown origins and make therapeutic claims without scientific proof.

Glicojax claims to assist in glucose control, metabolic health, and even combat diabetes.

On the other hand, Durasil, sold in drops, promises to relieve pain and improve erectile function, which has not been proven either.

Platforms Remove Irregular Ads

Following the decision by Anvisa, e-commerce platforms removed the ads for the supplements.

Agência Brasil contacted the online sales platforms Shopee and Mercado Livre, where the products were also being sold.

Shopee stated that it swiftly removed the products and penalized the involved sellers.

“As soon as it became aware of the determination, Shopee promptly removed the ads in question. The products sold on the platform undergo a series of screenings, and items that violate regulatory norms or our policies are removed, with the store penalized, to protect users,” said the company.

Mercado Livre emphasized that its terms prohibit the sale of items not authorized by Anvisa. According to the company, irregular ads are removed as soon as they are identified, which may result in account suspension.

“The platform continuously works to combat the sale of irregular items, using proprietary technology, specialized monitoring teams, and reporting channels. Whenever an ad that does not comply with the rules is identified, the content is promptly removed, and the seller is subject to measures that may include account suspension or blocking”.

Consumer Alert

Finally, Anvisa reinforces the importance of verifying the origin of condensed milk, supplements, and other products before purchasing. The guidance is to be wary of miracle claims and prioritize regulated items, ensuring greater safety for health.
