CSP Announced This Week That It Can Export Steel to Europe, Expanding ArcelorMittal Brazil’s International Presence.
This is yet another action by the company, which completed the purchase of the Ceará plant for exporting steel and intends to increasingly expand the business of the world’s largest steel group.
Learn More About ArcelorMittal’s New Steel Export Project
CSP, one of the newest plants in the Brazilian steel industry with a production capacity of 3 million tons per year, was acquired by ArcelorMittal in a US$ 2.2 billion deal announced in July last year. Currently, in addition to the domestic market, CSP is exported to North America, including the United States and Mexico, to complement the external sales already made to the United States by the group’s plant in Espírito Santo.
Company Plans to Create New Strategies for Steel Export
The Pésen plant, inaugurated in 2008, is expected to reach full capacity between this year and next, and ArcelorMittal plans to study a possible expansion as part of its verticalization strategy in Brazil after closing the deal. With the increase in steel production after the acquisition, the group will have more material to roll and will serve different industries, such as the automotive sector.

The Batista brothers, owners of JBS, have an estimated fortune of R$ 30.5 billion each, control more than 50 brands ranging from Friboi and Seara to PicPay, Neutrox, and Minuano, operate in more than 180 countries, and caused operations at the port of Itajaí to skyrocket by 330% in less than two years.
However, domestic and external macroeconomic conditions have created some uncertainty for steel consumption in Brazil, including rising interest rates putting pressure on demand for a range of products, including cars. CSP currently produces 2.85 million tons of steel per year, and the focus in the short term is on healthy integration between its two operations.
With the acquisition of CSP, ArcelorMittal increased its flat steel production capacity in Brazil to 10.5 million tons per year, while its total capacity, including long products, rose to 15.5 million tons.
How Is Steel Export in Brazil?
Over the years, as Brazil developed, the country increased production and managed to expand the market, but the more industries there were, the greater the demand for the product. From January to December 2021, there were 380 maritime shipments for NCMs beginning with the code 7325. According to Logcomex’s export module, about 10 thousand tons of products were shipped.
Export volumes (in tons) vary widely from 2020 to 2021, growing by over 40%. In terms of export routes, the main destination country is the United States, with over 16% of the cargo ending up at the Port of New York.
Brazil is an important steel supplier to the United States, which is one of the world’s largest buyers of steel products. Even with the Covid-19 pandemic affecting global trade, maritime exports remained balanced in recent years.
