One of the reasons for Lula’s trip to Buenos Aires on Monday (23) was due to the initiative to unlock the sale of 156 Brazilian armored vehicles from the Iveco company to the government of Argentina.
These “Guarani 6×6” vehicles are manufactured in Brazil but also have some components made in Argentina. The agreement, which provides for this technology transfer, had been stalled for several years during the entire term of former President Jair Bolsonaro and will now resume.
“They will encourage the negotiation of the contract between the Argentine Army and IVECO Defense Vehicles for the incorporation of 156 units of the Wheeled Armored Combat Vehicle ‘Guarani 6×6’, including technology transfer, compensation for the progressive increase in the manufacturing of parts in Argentina, logistical support, and training for the crew and technical personnel of the Argentine Army,” says a part of the agreement signed on Monday.
This agreement also serves as an incentive for Brazilian investment in the defense industry, which Lula intends to grow.
On this second day of international agenda in Argentina, President Lula (PT), on Tuesday (24), will meet with various authorities and heads of state. Among them are Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Miguel Díaz-Canel, President of Cuba.

However, this Brazilian leader will participate in the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), one of the main political discussion blocks in the region, composed of about 33 countries.
This is one of the first actions to be taken for the repositioning of the country’s foreign relations, which was constantly highlighted during Lula’s electoral campaign, marking also Brazil’s return to the meeting. Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) had suspended Brazilian participation at the beginning of January 2020.
On Lula’s agenda is a lunch with Alberto Fernández, President of Argentina; a meeting with the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu; and a meeting with the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley.
On the following Wednesday (25), the Brazilian head of state is expected to go to Uruguay, where he will meet with President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou. And next month, on February 9, Lula’s trip to the United States is scheduled, where an agenda with Joe Biden is planned for the following day (10).
After discussing the unlocking of the sale of 156 Brazilian armored vehicles to the neighboring country, which had been stalled during the previous administration, Lula made a statement to the press, where he “apologized for all the rudeness of the last Brazilian president,” calling the former president a “genocidaire” for his lack of care during the pandemic and for all the offenses he made against Fernández. “The relationship between Brazil and Argentina will be the best among all countries in South America,” Lula concluded.
