During The Conflict In Ukraine, Russian Soldiers Rely On The IRP, A Complete Food Package With Food, Utensils, Purifiers, And Portable Heaters
During the war in Ukraine, Russian soldiers rely on an individual food package known as the IRP (Индивидуальный Рацион Питания). This kit is designed to keep a fighter active for up to 24 hours in the battlefield. It does not replace mobile kitchens for extended periods, but it ensures survival until more robust support arrives.
What Comes Inside The Package?
The contents of the IRP are standardized, although there are small variations between manufacturers. Overall, the kit includes five to six ready-to-eat meals. The packaging can be in cans or sealed pouches.
Among the foods are cooked meats, stews with vegetables, and cereals such as rice or barley, as well as liver pates or processed cheese.

Additionally, there are sweets and snacks. Common items include chocolate bars, jellies, and sweet spreads made from nuts. For beverages, there are sachets of tea, instant coffee, and electrolyte powders. Small packages of sugar, salt, and pepper are also included.
Military Ration: Items To Facilitate Use In The Field
The package also includes practical items. Each ration comes with plastic utensils, a can opener, napkins or wet wipes. Soldiers receive waterproof matches, combustion tablets, or even flame-free heaters to warm up food. Water purification tablets are also included.
In total, the standard IRP (IRP‑P) provides about 3,100 calories per day. It is not intended for prolonged use: it is recommended that soldiers do not consume it for more than six consecutive days.
For more demanding situations, there is a reinforced version (IRP‑U), with up to 5,000 calories and extra foods like nuts, cheese, and condensed milk.
Taste And Experience Reported By Soldiers
Practical experiences reported by soldiers highlight traditional flavors. Many mention the rice with beef and pates, as well as simple desserts like jellies and chocolate.
Although the texture of some foods varies and the preservation depends on the type of packaging, the taste aims to resemble homemade food.
How The Military Ration Reaches The Soldier In The Battlefield?
The distribution of these packages depends on a well-structured logistics system. The IRPs are transported by train to distribution centers. From there, about 400 logistics brigade trucks transport them to the front lines.
Deliveries are made daily or as needed. Even after attacks on these centers, the rail system and hubs were quickly resumed, keeping the supply line active.
