Tesla Faced 45% Drop in European Sales in January, While Elon Musk’s Role in the Company Sparks Debate About the Manufacturer’s Future
Tesla had a tough start to the year in Europe, with significant declines in electric vehicle (EV) sales in January.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, the automaker, led by Elon Musk, recorded 9,945 units sold, a significant drop from the 18,161 vehicles sold in the same month in 2024.
This performance occurred against a backdrop of growing EV sales, which had a 37% increase in overall sales, with strong numbers reported from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The drop in sales was especially notable in Germany, where Tesla sold only 1,277 new cars, the worst monthly result since July 2021. In France, the situation was even worse, with a 63% drop, marking the poorest performance since August 2022.
Drop Also in the United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, the drop was 8% in a market that grew 42% in January. The most surprising data was that a Tesla was surpassed by models from BYD, a Chinese automaker, in the UK, marking its first victory over Musk’s brand in the British market.
One of the reasons for Tesla’s poor performance in Europe could be the delay in the Model Y, which has yet to reach its maximum production capacity. By the end of 2024, the stock of this model was nearly depleted, and deliveries of the updated version have not yet arrived.
As the Model Y is the company’s highest volume vehicle, this change directly impacted Tesla’s sales at the beginning of 2025.
Another factor that has been pointed out is the controversial figure of Elon Musk. His popularity has significantly declined in key countries like Germany and the United Kingdom, following his controversial political statements.
A YouGov survey conducted in January revealed that nearly 80% of Germans and Britons hold an unfavorable opinion of Musk. His influence on Tesla has increasingly been viewed as a hurdle, with many consumers stating they would not buy a Tesla due to Musk’s actions.
Dissatisfaction with Tesla’s leader is reflected on social media, where many Tesla owners have declared they will sell their cars and opt for other brands, even knowing that competing models are, in many cases, inferior to Tesla vehicles.
This movement has shown that the brand’s popularity has significantly declined, directly affecting sales figures.
The year 2025 will be a challenge for Tesla, as Musk’s image seems to be more of a problem than an asset for the company. With his side activities, such as Twitter (X) and his political stance, Musk has affected public perception levels of Tesla, which may further harm the brand in the coming months.
