More Difficult for Brazilian Pockets: Gasoline and Diesel Prices May See New Increases Soon, Says Ativa Investimentos
Petrobras announced an increase in gasoline and diesel prices this Thursday, with new values already in effect today, Friday (16). The average gasoline prices are now R$ 2.64 at refineries (an increase of 1.9%), while diesel will cost R$ 2.76 (an increase of 3.8%).
However, the price increase may continue in the short term, according to an analysis by Ativa Investimentos. In an analysis of the lag models, the investment firm believes there is still room for a potential price increase of up to 11% in a short period of time.
Gasoline and Diesel Prices May See New Increases in the Short Term
Ativa Investimentos, through its chief economist Étore Sanchez, stated that their best model for monitoring the lag indicates there is a potential increase of up to 11%. This increase in fuel prices, if it materializes, is likely to be passed on to consumers at the pumps.

Petrobras’ policy is not to interfere with prices and to change them at any moment, without defining a regularity. The state-owned company informed in a statement the strategy for yet another increase in gasoline and diesel prices.
”Adjustments are made at any time, without a defined periodicity, according to market conditions and an analysis of the external environment. This allows the company to compete more efficiently and flexibly and avoids the immediate pass-through of external volatility to internal prices.”

The lives of Brazilians change when it comes to gasoline and diesel prices. With the new increase from yesterday, gasoline now accumulates a 43.47% increase just this year. Diesel prices have increased by 36.63%. In December, gasoline was sold at refineries for R$ 1.84 per liter, while diesel was sold for R$ 2.02.
Change in Petrobras Leadership
Carlos Alberto Pereira de Oliveira is in charge of Petrobras while Luna e Silva has not taken over the presidency of the state-owned company. The general arrives at the company to replace Castello Branco, who was dismissed by President Jair Bolsonaro due to disagreements regarding the company’s pricing policy.
