Abandoned Airplane Wreckage Reveals War Memories and Raises Debates About Preservation of Historical Artifacts
In the middle of the Arizona desert, an old airport holds the silent remnants of abandoned airplanes from World War II. The scene, discovered by a YouTube explorer, looks like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie.
Discovery of Abandoned Airplanes in the Desert
The YouTuber known as Jessie’s Drone Adventures decided to explore the site on her own. She visited the Gila River Memorial Airport, originally built in 1942 under the name of Williams Auxiliary Army Airfield.
The airfield served as an auxiliary field of the Williams Army Airfield, being one of several used by the Army during the war.

After the conflict, the airport underwent changes and was renamed Goodyear Air Force Auxiliary Airfield. The runway configuration was modified in the 1950s to accommodate early jet aircraft.

Abandonment and Deterioration
Over time, the site ceased to be used by the military and came under civilian control. In the 1970s, it still did not have a hangar, and later it was completely abandoned.
Today, it functions as a true aircraft graveyard. Airplanes rot under the scorching desert sun. The YouTuber documented the precarious state of models like the Lockheed PV-2 Harpoon and the Lockheed Venturer. Many are left with loose wires, rusted metal, and broken structures.
The cockpits are covered in dirt, plasterboards, and graffiti. Some fuselages show clear signs of deterioration, with destroyed noses and exposed metalwork. The atmosphere is, according to the YouTuber herself, “creepy.”
Hangar and Eerie Atmosphere
In addition to the aircraft, the old hangar was also explored. The place retains the same strange feeling. Discarded office equipment, plates on the floor, and part of the ceiling collapsed reinforce the atmosphere of abandonment.
The Gila River Memorial Airport, which once had strategic importance during the war, now serves as a symbol of a past left behind.
Even with the dangers and the precarious state of the structures, the site still attracts curious visitors and explorers in search of unique records.
