The Dutch Company Ocean Grazer Created a “Ocean Battery” That Has the Capacity to Store Renewable Energy at the Bottom of the Sea. The Battery Was Showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA
Named “Ocean Battery,” the new battery is a gradual and modular solution for energy storage, at utility scale, produced by renewable sources such as offshore wind turbines and floating solar parks. The ocean battery is a pumped hydraulic system in a box, which provides environmentally friendly energy storage up to the scale of GWh. The mechanism is based on hydroelectric dam technology, which has proven to be highly reliable and efficient for over a century.

To store energy, the battery system pumps water from the rigid reservoirs to the flexible bags at the bottom of the sea. After that, energy is stored as potential energy in the form of high-pressure water. When there is energy demand, the water flows back from the flexible bags to the low-pressure rigid reservoirs, driving several hydroelectric turbines to generate electricity.
Battery Storage Capacity
One of the main challenges that the use of renewable energy faces is that they need support from backup systems to ensure they remain active even when there is no sun or wind.

An “invisible” plant can transform rivers meeting the sea into electricity 24 hours a day: French startup uses nanotechnology to extract energy from the salt difference between fresh and saltwater, without sun, wind, dam, or fuel.
On the other hand, the ocean battery provides utility-scale energy storage at the source and can be deployed in existing and new offshore wind farms. This way, it is possible to reduce local load peaks on the grid and ideally match supply and demand.
By applying proven hydroelectric dam technology, the Dutch company Ocean Grazer ensures a long lifespan of decades and high storage efficiency of up to 80%. “This makes our technology reliable and accessible,” states the company’s website.
Environmentally Friendly Battery
The technology of the “Ocean Battery” is sustainable and environmentally friendly, as it does not require rare earth materials and uses clean water as an energy carrier. The structure has been designed to enhance marine life.
Importance of Renewable Energies
Renewable energy production is crucial for a climate-neutral economy. This energy transition requires a significant shift in the energy system. For this, more and more solar and wind turbine farms are being developed onshore and offshore to contribute to a sustainable society.
To grow into a system where renewable energy is the norm, the biggest obstacle must be addressed: energy storage. With this, Ocean Grazer is harnessing this enormous renewable energy potential by introducing the Ocean Battery.
