Resources Allocated to Expand the Implementation of Renewable Energy Projects, Promoting Sustainability and Contributing to the Fight Against Climate Change
The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) announced the approval of over R$ 10 billion in credit for financing from the National Fund on Climate Change, known as the Climate Fund. These resources aim to boost the expansion of renewable energy projects in various regions of Brazil, contributing to environmental sustainability and decarbonization of the economy.
Significant Investments in Renewable Energy in Different Regions of Brazil
The distribution of the resources approved by BNDES varies among the regions of the country. The Southeast Region received the largest share, with R$ 4.1 billion, followed by the Central-West, which obtained R$ 2 billion.
In the Northeast, R$ 1.8 billion was approved; in the South, R$ 1.6 billion; and in the North, R$ 460 million.

The prospector who heard about the advance of soy in Maranhão and opened a grocery store in Balsas in 1986 transformed that small store into Grupo Mateus, the third largest supermarket in Brazil, with revenues of R$ 43.5 billion and 490 units.

Fiserv, the world’s largest payment processor, has just inaugurated its first factory outside Asia in Brazil. The unit in Betim (MG) will produce 100,000 Clover payment terminals per year and is part of a US$100 million investment that includes technology and expansion until 2027.

The country that will lose almost all its territory to the ocean by 2100 has started building new land on the very sea that threatens to swallow the Maldives.
This total amount represents a significant increase, “almost ten times higher” than the volume recorded in 2022, reflecting a continuous effort to intensify the energy transition in Brazil.
Growth in the Northeast
The Northeast stands out as the region with the highest proportional growth of resources from the Climate Fund. In 2024, the total of R$ 1.8 billion approved for the region was 36 times higher than what was allocated in 2022, which was only R$ 51 million.
The resources allocated to the Northeast will be used to expand renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar power, which are expected to generate more than 450 megawatts (MW) for the National Interconnected System (SIN).
This expansion is crucial to meet the growing energy demand in the region, which has seen a significant increase in its installed renewable energy capacity in recent years.
Statements from BNDES
“The Climate Fund allows us to deepen this strategy of strengthening the green economy, decarbonization, and environmental sustainability, especially in this global context of climate change denial,” stated the president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, when presenting the results.
The Climate Fund is considered one of the main instruments of the country for mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change.

The bank has committed to supporting initiatives that aim not only to reduce carbon emissions but also to promote social inclusion and sustainable economic development.
Transpetro Ensures Supply of LPG in the North Region
In another relevant news, Petrobras Transporte S.A. (Transpetro) reported that it managed to supply 16.6 thousand tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the North Region during last year’s drought, the worst in 74 years.
LPG is widely used for both household purposes, such as cooking, and for energy generation in industries and agriculture.
This supply was essential to ensure the continuity of services and minimize the drought’s impacts on the population and local economy.
Operation Codajás
The supply of LPG was carried out through Operation Codajás, which facilitated the flow of fuels during the low water period of the Amazon River, when navigation becomes more difficult, especially between November and December.
The operation involved significant logistical efforts, including the use of vessels adapted to navigate under adverse conditions.
This project not only ensured the delivery of LPG but also demonstrated Transpetro’s ability to respond to crises and challenges related to energy supply in extreme situations.
The Role of BNDES in the Energy Transition
The role of BNDES in promoting renewable energy and fighting climate change is fundamental.
The bank not only finances projects but also acts as an agent of transformation, encouraging the implementation of sustainable technologies and the adoption of practices that respect the environment.
Furthermore, BNDES has been working to create partnerships with other institutions and entities, aiming to foster an ecosystem of innovation and sustainable development in Brazil.
Future Perspectives for the Climate Fund
The Climate Fund is positioned to play an increasingly significant role in the coming years.
With the growing awareness of the importance of sustainability and the urgency of climate change, more projects are expected to be developed with the fund’s support.
Continuing funding for renewable sources, along with other sustainable initiatives, will be crucial to ensure that Brazil advances in its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a greener future.
Considerations on Energy Supply in Brazil
The initiatives by BNDES and Transpetro demonstrate a joint effort to promote renewable energy and ensure energy supply across different regions of Brazil.
Investment in sustainable projects and efficiency in fuel supply are key to facing climate challenges and ensuring a more sustainable future for the country.
Collaboration between the public and private sectors will be essential to achieve sustainable development goals and ensure Brazil’s energy resilience in the face of climate change.
