Investment in the airport by BNDES aims to modernize, increase operational capacity and attract new international flights
O Aluízio Alves International Airport, located in São Gonçalo do Amarante, in the metropolitan region of Natal, will receive R $ million 260 for works of expansion and modernization. The investment includes R $ million 185 do BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) and more R $ million 75 de two capital market investors, through encouraged debentures, according to the Tribuna do Norte website.
The goal is increase operational capacity of the terminal, focusing on cargo logistics, passenger transport and expansion of tourist flights.
Economic growth and new international flights
During the announcement of the BNDES investment, the president of BNDES, Merchant Aloizio, highlighted the importance of support for the economic development of Rio Grande do Norte.

“The goal is to increase the airport’s operational capacity, both for cargo transportation and tourist flights. The expansion will also benefit the logistics of the Post Office in the state, facilitating the flow of planes and traffic.”, said Mercadante.
In addition to the physical expansion, the airport will have a new international flight from July 2025 , connecting Natal to Santiago, Chile. The new route strengthens Rio Grande do Norte's position as one of main tourist destinations do Brazilian Northeast.
International tourism driven by PATI
The governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Fatima Bezerra, highlighted that the project is part of the actions do Northeast Consortium and International Tourism Acceleration Program (PATI). The program, supported by federal government via Ministry of Ports and Airports and Ministry of Tourism, provides for the investment of R $ million 63 to promote tourist destinations in the Brazilian Northeast.
“This investment by BNDES strengthens our infrastructure and boosts tourism, generating jobs and income for the population”, said the governor.
