Brazil Registers Increase in Oil and Natural Gas Reserves in 2024, According to Data from the National Oil Agency. See the Highlights of the Energy Sector in the Statistical Yearbook of ANP.
Brazil recorded a significant growth in oil and natural gas reserves in 2024, according to a report released by the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) on Monday (30).
Proven oil reserves totaled 16.8 billion barrels, and total reserves reached 29.2 billion barrels, representing a 6% increase compared to 2023.
During the same period, natural gas reserves reached 740.5 billion cubic meters, an increase of 5.1%. The release is part of the Brazilian Statistical Yearbook of Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels, which details the evolution of the national energy sector.

Oil Production Registers a Slight Decline, but Pre-Salt Remains Dominant
Despite the increase in reserves, the national oil production fell by 1%, closing the year with an average of 3.4 million barrels per day. Nevertheless, the pre-salt maintained its strategic importance, accounting for 78.8% of total production, with a daily average of 2.6 million barrels.
This concentration reaffirms the relevance of the pre-salt as the main oil exploration hub in the country, with great attractiveness for investors and companies in the sector.
Natural Gas Sector Also Advances
The performance of natural gas was also positive. Proven reserves of the commodity grew by 5.6%, reaching 546 billion cubic meters. Meanwhile, national production increased by 2.5%, with an average of 153.2 million cubic meters per day, with 76.7% of this volume coming from the pre-salt.
This advance reflects the stability of investments in infrastructure and technology to expand the exploration and flow of natural gas.
Petroleum Derivatives: Slight Expansion and Highlighting Diesel and Gasoline
The production of petroleum derivatives grew by 1.2%, reaching 2.2 million barrels per day. This corresponds to 86.4% of the refining capacity installed in Brazil.
Among the standout products, gasoline production increased by 4.26%, and diesel production grew by 3.3%. Meanwhile, sales of derivatives by distributors rose by 0.6%, with a highlight for aviation kerosene, which saw a 6.78% increase.
Biofuels Gain Strength with Biodiesel and Ethanol
The biofuels segment also had a robust performance in 2024. Biodiesel production grew by 20.4%, driven by the increase in the blending ratio in diesel.
Ethanol production also increased by 4.2%, reaching 37 billion liters. Sales of hydrated ethanol surged by 33.9% during the period, indicating greater adherence to the renewable fuel.
ANP Reinforces the Strategic Role of the Brazilian Energy Sector
According to ANP, the consolidated data demonstrate Brazil’s growing potential in the global energy scenario. The rising reserves and diversification of sources, including oil, natural gas, and biofuels, position the country as a benchmark in sustainability and energy security.
For the sector, the numbers indicate not only an expansion of the resource base but also opportunities for investments in innovation, infrastructure, and clean energy.
